Advertising can be tricky and expensive for newcomers.

Google adwords will completely eat your budget if you're not targetted enough. And advertising at WHT is almost fruitless, as it's flooded with hosts.

Try locally. Yes, it's alot of effort, but it's worth it. Local clients are willing to pay more, if they can get their services within their community/country.

Other then that, research research research. Reads reviews, find a host that's reliable.

One last thing : If you treat your clients right, they'll treat you right by reffering you to friends of theirs, and it will snowball from there..

Goodluck!

There are tons of tutorials here on those subjects, be sure to check out those areas. You can do all the reading you want, but you'll learn the fastest by getting hands on experience.

First you should consider everything else about your hosting business, then you should consider promoting.

As for advertising, I would suggest either hiring an ad agency, or going trial and error style. Both ways are going to cost you, but in the end advertising is going to boil down to what you offer and who you want to offer it to, and only you can determine these things.

Hello bgrosu,
First you may target local community and then move to world. At this time you can run a "Forum" and put your ads here. The furom should be related to IT and target local market.

The most important thing is customer support.. if you provide better support. Your customers will care about your biz!

Cheers,
Beruska

The local approach really does work - it's how we started. Almost our entire client base at present are local businesses and individuals, to the extent that we didn't even have a website ourselves for long enough. Once you get a few clients under your belt, like WK-Anthony said, it will snowball.

Be careful though - don't get so busy looking for new business and signing new clients up that you don't have time to look after the clients you already have...

There are quite a few things you can do, but here are the most effective.

1) Find a local computer shop, not one of the big multi-nationals, and see if they will give you referrals. The one I work with here does this for me. I buy all my hardware (we sell ADSL locally) from them, and they pass me referrals from anyone that asks about domain names, web hosting and ADSL.

2) Get some advertising in the local rag, it tends not to be too expensive for small classified type ads, and you will be surprised how many people do actually read it. You need to word your advertising carefully... work out who you're targetting, is it personal, business, or do you not mind... make sure you're in the right paper for your target audience.

3) Go out and meet people. People will always prefer to do business with someone they can shake hands with. However, if you're going to do this, you have to make sure that you're well presented and well prepared. If you do not come across as confident, don't take this option. If you can, phone ahead to the company, find out who deals with that side of the business, then you have a name to ask for when you go in.

Those are the three things I did when I was first starting out, and it's paying off, slowly. If you're expecting a get rich quick scheme, try another line of business. The only way to make money in this industry is by being reliable and looking after the most important part of your business, your customers.

Customer care always has to be No.1, I don't think anyone will argue with me here.

Hope this helps.

Oh, and another thing that's worked well for me... when you start getting customers, offer them a free month, or similar, if they get someone they know to signup with you. I've had a lot of business this way, however, remember if you don't look after the customer and they go elsewhere, you will lose all the people they referred too.

Good luck.
