I'm now an openSRS reseller, but are they any good at registering uk domain names, speciffically co.uk, and has anyone transferred co.uk's to openSRS? did you have any problems?
Thanks in Advance :spiny:

Hello
I would advise against using OpenSRS for .co.uk because:
1. Complicated to transfer domains to their IPSTAG
2. Complicated and lengthy process to transfer domains
to another IPSTAG which involves the customer having to fax TUCOWS.
This may not seem like a big issue as you can change the name servers on line but most large UK hosting companies make it a contractual requirment that you move your domain to their IPSTAG to host with them (e.g. FASTHOSTS).
If you can't change the tag you are going to be left looking very silly and have weeks of work chasing it up and being chased
by your (ex) customer.
Not nice.

So Gordon, do you then recommend buying your .uk domain through your hosting company instead?

No
Web hosting companies should source .co.uk domains
directly from nominet or from a registrar who allows online changes to be made to the IPSTAG.
OpenSRS do not allow this and it all has to be done with faxes.
Very messy and stressful.

Cheers for the info, I don't fancy pushing faxes across from the UK too often, but then again, I don't wnat to hand over £500 to nominet for the privilage of registering co.uk domain names!
Any ideas on other domain reseller sites? or should I stick with OpenSRS? :D

Hi,
We have been with Nominet for a few weeks now and it has been well worth the money. It really depends on the amount of domains you think you will register but we see it as an investment more than anything.

I suppose if you are only registering a few you could use 123reg.co.uk who sell them for £6.79 (I think)
OpenSRS are $13.
But its the IPSTAG thing rather than the price which is the issue.
Doing it that way you will still have problems with people
transferring in domains.
FYI OpenSRS register about 2000 .uk domains per month.
Not a large amount really.

I guess I'll have to see how many domain names I register first, if I order over 100 I'll think about nominet, I guess for now I'll use openSRS.
If I use 123reg.co.uk will they remain anonymous? what about freeparking.co.uk?

OpenSRS won't remain anonymous either.
If I had the chance to go back in time I would not have used OpenSRS for .uk simply because of the admin problems.
At the time I worked out that the cost of joining nominet would be recovered in 6 months just from a financial perspective but the
reduction in hassle has preserved my fingernails and had other benefits.

Anoher issue to consider:
OpenSRS only do .co.uk/.org.uk
This means you can't sell or transfer in .me.uk .ltd.uk etc
