Hi guys,

As some of you may have read, I've been hosting several sites with FutureQuest for several months now. They've been really fantastic - great support, great uptime, fast and reliable servers. The only problem is, one of my sites requires several subdomains and addon domains. FutureQuest has some unusual policies regarding these. For example, they will only let me put an SSL certificate on the base domain, not on the subdomains or addon domains. They will also only allow MySQL on the base domain. For this reason, I am forced to move one (not all) of my sites hosted with FutureQuest elsewhere. The site doesn't use a lot of space and bandwidth - 400MB space and 10GB bandwidth is what it has over at FutureQuest and that's more than enough - but what it does need is great uptime and reliability. I've looked into Pair, but their policies on SSL and MySQL etc. for subdomains and addon domains are simillar to those of FutureQuest. Can anyone recommend any web host of the same sort of quality as these two that does allow me to have SSL certificates and MySQL on my subdomains and addon domains? I've seriously considered getting a fully managed dedicated server from Rackspace or Fastservers for this as that leaves me with the possibility to do whatever I want in this respect, but paying such a high price for such a small site seems mad. What do you guys think?

Thanks

I am not sure about the SSL issue, but the Legend 1 package from Cyberwurx seems good for you. The service is real 24/7.

Hello,

Could you please specify how you like to use SSL certificates on subdomains? As far as I know, if you install a certificate on a server, you can use it on any domain or subdomain by specifying a special SSL port for each.

Regarding MySQL, it should not be bound to domain name as MySQL service runs independently from domain name and you can access it via IP address of the server or by only typing its address as localhost.

I can recommend you a few hosts if you can specify your specific needs regarding SSL...

I do not think you can install SSL for add-on domains.

Yes, it has to be different SSL certificate for each domain. I think the best solution is to register a single domain name for your SSL needs and use that domain for SSL needing pages on other domains.

Hi there,

With the MySQL thing, no it is not bound to a specific domain, that's just a policy which FutureQuest has in place, hence the reason I am forced to find a new host for this domain.

As for SSL, you have to have a separate SSL certificate for each subdomain or addon domain. You can have one for all subdomains if you have a wildcard SSL certificate, but that just works out very expensive. I want to have different subdomains such as billing.mydomain.com and support.mydomain.com and have SSL certificates on each of those. I know it's not directly supported by CPanel web hosts although if they wanted to they could make it work by editing httpd.conf, and it's not supported by FutureQuest, hence the reason I am forced to move hosts.

Thank you

Hi guys,

I've decided to move the site to a dedicated server. It may be a small site, but I'd like that extra bit of freedom. I've got some questions, but I'll post those in the dedicated forum shortly.

Thanks

Just some clarification on SSL certificates

Normally, an SSL certificate is for a specific host at a specific domain like www1.domain.com. If you try to use a certificate on one subdomain when it was issued for main domain, your visitors' browsers will warn them that the site name does not match the certificate and ask if they want to abort the connection.

Many certificate authorities are now offering wildcard certificates which are intended to allow you to buy one certificate that can be used on any subdomain under your domain name. The problem with wildcard certificates is that all browsers may not support them and some of your visitors may receive warnings or may not be able to connect to your site using SSL at all.

Yogihost, thanks for the very clear points your have specified above. I agree with you in all points. But as far as I have understood, MTSpace is willing to use a normal SSL certificate for his subdomains under a regular domain name.

I am not sure if browser will warn if you use the same SSL certificate on top level domain and its subdomain.
