There are so many hosting companies around and all with good/negative impressions, so that I am not so sure for whom to opt.

My newly build website is set up on Drupal (content management system), so I am in need of a reliable webhosting company on which Drupal will run smoothly
(anyhow, lock-table permission must be granted).

I would welcome some suggestions.

regards,
MJ

People may be able to better orient you if you can provide an idea of your budget and disk space / data transfer requirements.

Anyways, good luck with your search!

Hosting companies can't directly recommend their own services on the forum. However, in order to start and narrow done your selection. Specify your budget, requirements, and expectations. What is most important to you ? uptime ? support?

Best of luck in your search, definitely check out the offers section here at WHT.

well: budget $10 for a single account, $ 15 for multiple domain hosting.
I expect a good uptime and also good support (but isn't that what we all want).

I know hosting providers can't promote their services, I had hoped to get some reaction from other Drupal users.

greetings,

Drupal requires PHP and a PHP-supported Database Server (mysql). So look for these when searching. For your budget you'll have plenty of choices to choose from. It take some hard digging to screen out the reliable ones.

I've never experienced any problems with the LOCK TABLE permission and Drupal: could you elaborate on the problems you've been having?

If you're wanting to look for certain features, you're best off e-mailing hosts you're interested in and asking what they specifically support/what they can do about it.

Other features to look for:

Use of Apache’s mod_php rather than having to resort to CGI: better performance
Increased PHP memory_limit: prevents many errors
Support for Apache’s mod_rewrite: creation of “pretty” URLs to aid in search engine optimization

I'd look for a provider that offers cPanel and Fantastico, since then you can install Drupal in 2 clicks. Check the offers page for a cPanel host

no, DO NOT use Fantastico's Drupal installer. It's horribly broken and there are numerous posts about this on Drupal's site. That aside, Drupal, depending on what you are going to do with it, can be a pretty hefty program. I would strongly encourage you plan out exactly what you are going to do w/ your site ahead of time. Adding things like Gallery or switching from the node-forums to something like SMF or vB will significantly increase Drupal's CPU time and memory usage due to the heavy PHP scripts.

I did see, last week, that there is a host who specializes in nothing but Drupal sites. It was on the Drupal forums but on a quick search I didn't find them. I know I saw them though. They're a bit more costlier than your traditional shared vendor but they optimize their servers for Drupal and provide support for Drupal as well as help you get things running. If I recall correctly, they had plans starting at $15/month up to $50/month but I just saw it in passing so those might not be 100% correct.

Anyways, good luck but just know that for many providers, Drupal might be a bit too resource hungry for a shared server.

I frequent the Drupal forums often: the only one I remember seeing like that is Bryght (http://www.bryght.com/). They are free right now, but I remember when they launch they will be $35/month?

This is the most important thing to remember. If you have an active Drupal site, budget shared packages will either struggle or you will be booted off. If your site is not too active then there shouldn't be a problem with most of them.

yeah, I remember that one but there was one other. I know I saw it before last weekend but I don't remember exactly when. Bleah, my memory begins to fade...

opensourcehost.com ?

Someone pointed me in their reaction, so I will have a look at them.
Other persons said that Site5 is also good, but browsing the files I am a little bit in doubt.

My site is already up and running at another hosting company but there are a few glitches there.

greetz,

MJ
