View Full Version : Does NameZero still do this?

Awhile ago, I registered "mylastname".com through NameZero for free. And when my free year was up, they kept emailing me asking me to renew for so much $. Each week, it got cheaper until finally it was $4.95 for one year. So I went ahead and renewed. Now it's another year later and they're asking $24.95 for a year. I don't want to lose the domain, but I don't want to pay that price either.

I think I would've been able to transfer the name to another registrar if I'd did it before the expiration date, but the expire date was April 10th.

So, in short, my question is: will they do like they did last year and keep sending emails with a lower renew price? Should I go ahead and pay $24.95 to be safe or wait it out?

By the way, the .net .org and .info's are all registered so there is reason to worry that it'll get snatched up if I let it drop.

Thanks in advance. :)

I would pay the 24.95 to renew the domain, then transfer it to another cheaper registrar.

It's a real shame that after you payed Namezero for your domain that you didn't transfer it to a cheaper (and better) registrar. You probably waited too long. They'll probably keep sending you cheaper offers as time goes by, but it all depends on if you want to take a chance at losing your domain name. If you don't mind taking a chance, call their bluff and keep waiting till the name is really cheap. If you REALLY want the name, pay the fee, and then transfer it to another registrar first chance you get.

Abu,

That's what I was planning to do last year. Register with NameZero and wait until around the time my registration was up to transfer to another registrar so I could get the most for my money. And, obviously, I waited too long.

I think I will see what their next couple emails say before I pay $25. :D I'm so cheap.

Thanks very much for your input!

But, after I got my dedicated server, I figured I could set up to do just about everything they were giving me so I bailed out without worrying about "getting my money's worth". Lucky break!

I think I will see what their next couple emails say before I pay $25. :D I'm so cheap.I've learned my lesson. Sometimes being cheap costs much more than expected. Anyhow, good luck.

When you transfer to another registrar you add 1 year to the registration. You would not have lost the time if you had transferred it out of Namezero.

Namezero offers several features that were quite nice. One was the email forwarding and filtering. I had a lot of filters defined to discard some emails (spam), forward others to specific addresses, and so on. I wanted to continue using these as long as I could. When I got my ded server, I decided I would be able to handle most everything on my own. Except for the email filtering, which I haven't been able to find a way to do this on my ded server. (If anyone knows how I can do this, please let me know. I have a RedHat 7.1 box.)

All you do is use .forward filters.

Here's a good manual:

Hi,

If I were you I would pay the $25 and transfer the domain name to godaddy or any other cheap registrar.

When you pay the $25 one year is added.
You move to Godaddy.com and you pay another $8.95 and another year is added.

So for just $34 you are on the safe side. And you are being cheap because your domain only costs you $17 for two years and later on only $8.95 !!!!

Good luck!
