What is the max number of users on a shared server to assure a decent service?
I assume a state-of-art server with dual CPU, 1 G RAM, and relative good disk space.
This question because I found that on one Aletia server (not good at moment) there are installed 300+ users. It seems to be too much, isn't it?

I'd only ever put about 100

There is no set in stone rule for the number of sites per server. Too many variables go into deciding when to cut off a server for there to be a number like that.

Variables to consider:

- total disk space available (no sense loading 800 sites on a server if you're just going to run out of room on /home)
- total average loads and CPU usage
- types of accounts that are resident on a server (obviously 500 tiny sites aren't the same as 300 giant sites, so setting some hard number is not a good reflection of the reality that might exist on the server; servers with 20 heavy mySQL forums will generate both a lot of traffic and suck up all available mySQL connections)

I think 100 is a sensible number of clients and around 600 sites maximum. That's our average......

So 300 clients wouldn't be excessive if they all had around 2 sites max.

You guys should read what Annette said.. it depends on the size and type of the accounts.. we have one server which had around 250 ish domains.. it was *easily* handling the loads.. then one client wanted 300 accounts with placeholders and a little bit of email for some of them.. so now there are 550 domains, but the loads are only marginally/slightly higher than before.. looks bad though if you subscribe to the more is worse every time..
