View Full Version : Multiple Domains using one Hosting package

I have two domain names.

The first one is the one I used when I signed up for a Hosting package with a host company.

What I need to know is whether or not I have to sign up for a new Hosting package for my second domain.

The Hosting package I already have has about 95% free space and it doesn't seem to make sense that I should have to obtain another Hosting package considering all the spare space I've got.

When I go into the Account Control Panel for the hosting account I now have, it is labelled with the domain I used for signing up. Everything else also seems to be a folder within this domain name.

Do I need to use the REDIRECT URL function, if so, how do I do it ?

Please help,
Thanks,
Stephen.

What you want can be done with .htaccess, I believe.

What is .htaccess, I don't understand. Is it a host company or a program or something else ?

Thanks,
Stephen.

It would depend on your webhost, but most can redirect another domain to an existing account. They would probably charge a fee for this, though. Just email them.

If you want your 2 domains having exactly the same content, then you can do so by using MyDomain (http://www.mydomain.com). It's free and you can use their IP Pointing if your main site has a static IP. Then both domain1.com/abc.html and domain2.com/abc.html will be the same.

If your main site does not have static IP, you may still use their Stealth Forwarding or Standard Forwarding. But they would make your site look less professional.

But if you are talking about splitting your host's webspace into the 2 domains, I think you have to discuss it with your host and chances are very low that they'll let you do it.

Your web host probably offers either 'parked' domains or 'pointer' domain services (same thing, different name) If they do, go a head and order the service.

Lets say, you have site abc.com and site def.com. You want abc.com files to be in sub directory of your web folder and you want def.com files in a differnet directory.

Soi if your main site is abc.com and you are probably on an Alabanza server or something that uses one of these two directory structures:

You will have a file manager and the folder will either say:
abc-www
- or -
public_html
- or -
www

WIthin that directory set up those directories and then go to Kastle.net and get their Redirect URL script. That works great for redirecting one domain to one directory and another domain to the other.

I suggest not using directories named 'abc' and 'def' or your URL will look like http://www.abc.com/abc/ (Looks kind of dumb)

Instead, use directories like 'inkex' 'main' 'frontend' etc.

gopher, I would suggest you contact your host's support and see what response you get. Based on that, you can then know your options. Chances are, they would do it for you free of charge.
