View Full Version : cpanel transfer problems
sharkman 04-26-2002, 09:32 PM hello
I use Cpanel 4.7 to transfer to trasnfer my accounts from another server with Cpanel 4.7. I also change my dns IP, but nnow that it is about 40 hours of porpogation and I'm cancelling the accounts from the old server, I'm noticing that my client's database's and e-mail accounts were not trasfered. Also noticed that the accounts passwords have been reseted. The question is, what have done wrong and what should I do next. I now that this is not the cpanel forum, but people seem to be a lot friendlier here.
you bring about some excellent points. i am about to transfer several hundred of our accounts to a new data center and i was going to use the built in transfer tool. however, if this many problems relly exist with the tool, i will need to rethink this.
i am very curious what others have to say about the built in transfer utility in WHM. i would think since it is released in a production environment it would actually work... but hey... this is about par for the course.
any feedback on this matter is greatly appreciated.

you sound like you need someone to help you.. especially if you were expecting cpanel to do a totally seamless account transfer in it's entirety.. someone might do it as a favour, but I doubt it, you can try.. but otherwise pay someone experienced to have a good look and tidy up any mess you have..

Great feature, but it isn't perfect.. you will still need to check the account config's.. it's faster and easier than SSH I suppose, but it's not a point, click and forget solution..
I advise you to test some transfers before you try a bulk transfer.. that way you'll see what happens .. *cough* :)
porcupine 04-26-2002, 11:59 PM Make sure you don't transfer any accounts to a FreeBSD box running CPanel. I just tried to setup FreeBSD 4.5 with cpanel not realising (until after install) that it was still in beta.... and let me tell you, it's totally worthless, it had loads up in the 20's (on an empty box), fed apache bad .conf information, the works.

do you know anyone who does cpanel to cpanel moves in bulk and makes sure that they all work properly. i have no problems paying someone to do it if the job gets done smoothly. any help on finding someone to do this would be much appreciated. i just have to get the heck our of this one data center ASAP!
thanks in advance!
AlaskanWolf 04-27-2002, 03:03 AM We have done quite a few, email me at garyp@www-hosting.net and we can talk about what u got in mind
mdrussell 04-27-2002, 04:15 AM We've had some problems with it too. I was chatting with Alan @ Splash Host about it, and he seems to think it's dns related - so get reverse dns setup on the box's IP.
We've just requested that the rdns is delegated to us, I'll let you know if it affects anything.

mpope 04-27-2002, 05:02 AM I've transferred quite a few accounts using the account transfer tool, and every time the databases get messed up. It's easy enough to do a mysqldump, but sometimes we do not have the database passwords. I've had some clients complain of subdomains being erased, occasional cgi errors, and other wierd problems.
If you use the account transfer tool, just make sure that you check out every aspect of each site before you move on to the next site. Check the databases, subdomains, user accounts, email accounts, the works.
The cpanel account transfer does do a very good job of transferring static html sites with no other features though... :D
sharkman 04-27-2002, 11:09 AM Yes I'm really having a hard time with the databases, what is mysqldump? I'm not very technical so if someone could explain me how to trasnfer the databases in plain english.
sharkman 04-27-2002, 12:04 PM But you know what, one of the biggest problems is that it has reseted my password, why is that, and does anyone know how to deal with that?
Synergy 04-27-2002, 12:52 PM Hrmm weird we have no problems migrating clients from cpanel server to cpanel server. The only one i've seen so far are permission errors. But I'm also scared that when I was told there was a bug that will delete the old account. :(
