View Full Version : No setup Rackshack Servers

I had my doubts about how rackshack could gain so much profit from those $99/month servers, but now, they are going to have no setup servers.

How can they make a profit? It will take about 3 - 4 months alone to take care of the dedicated server they provide us. Then the bandwidth.... That's like 4 months of free bandwidth until you start paying 25cents for bandwidth.

I'm thinking of getting one of those just for backups. (Which WILL utilize most of that 400GB Bandwidth)

These are 2nd user servers - servers that people have cancelled; RS have just done a fresh install and can sell them again.

Volume. They are a dsl company. They have over 6,000 servers now. I'm sure they can easily cover the costs of those servers with the amount of customers they have.

$6,000 * $99 = $594,000 + dsl

and you assume that all their 6000 clients pay just $99/mth for their boxes??

hehe I just haven't taken the time to add up how much all their lines cost them.

They are a DSL company now? I thought they were dial-up  I must be slow :)

I will clarify this one. This is a one day deal to close out a few customer cancells and a larger number of vendor RMAs that have come back to us finally. Our vendor made us a deal to buy these so we're passing along the savings. We will not be doing this in the future except on a once-in-a-while closeout basis. Lower to $1 setup fees are only here for a little while.

On the profitability issue, I'll not restate it here, but our profitability and gross sales numbers were released on the Business Wire and carried by thewhir.com. It's all there for public consumption. Those numbers are audited by Deloitte and Touche.

you figure with all that money you could spend some and get a better pic for the computer magazines, i'm not saying your ugly, but seeing you lean up against tower boxes is kinda ugly.

aussie bob, its an estimate, i know not all are going to be $99 OEM special, but they might actually be :) you never know.

It's really a pretty easy biz model to follow. See, the bandwidth is already paid for by the dial-up customers (you only pay one way with BW providers and dial up is all incoming BW). So that leaves the outgoing bandwidth essentially "free". It's a pretty slick model :)

What do you care if he's ugly or not? Does that really matter? He makes alot of money and runs a successful company. To have accomplished all that and to have developed a company that makes $3 million a month, in my eyes, is enough...

i didn't say he was ugly, i just said with some of that money he should get a better photo shoot.

Personally, I like that picture :)

We have an industrial photographer coming out next week to do all kinds of shots of the facility for a editorial in a well known industry publication. :)

So, you'll probably see all new ads in about 60-75 days. (With all new kinds of offers, as well :))

In the end, the picture will go .. but the life size framed prints in our office will stay. lol :)

That picture was used for a number of reasons not the least of which was a takeoff from the AMD/Rackspace ads. It showed a lot of computers. I was actually in a suit. Etc, Etc. The new ads will feature several DC pics.

I just wanted to mention that the wife has informed me that she gets the creeps looking at the life sized one you sent us (I hung in the living room per your instructions). While we appreciate the ummm... gift... ummmm... you'll have a spare for the office soon ;)

I'm so glad I know you're kidding. That would be one damn creepy thing to get in the mail. No offence to you Robert - anyone's full size pic in the mail would be odd (to say the least)

I can't say for sure but I have a feeling I know what Chicken's 'chick-ette' would say if he hung that up... and I doubt many of those words would pass WHT's 'potty mouth' filter :)

So if you got a full size pic of Pam Anderson, you'd think thats weird and not hang it up? :D

Insert any other model/actress for your own example :D

Our very first concept ad was a couple of ** young women** with bountiful chests in a picture with the caption .... "Nothing beats our racks.... absolutely nothing". Alas, I cam to my senses about 6 hours before the deadline and we went with an older version of the current ad.

All gone ... I was watching the AMD ones go from 57 to 2 in 15 minutes ... I was doubting to buy one and in the end I was too late ... :(

But I am thinking maybe I should get a RAQ4 first?? My website is now hosted on a RAQ4 along with other sites, so one for my own would be more than enough at the moment. What do you think?

AcuNett

Just to add to that, it seems RS now only has 10Mbit ports, no more 100Mbit ports. They have about 25 servers per port (as our network graphs indicate).

10Mbit can pull... 3200 GB bandwidth per month, and most of the traffic comes at peak hours, so only 2200GB of bandwidth are actually used.

That covers about 5 servers going at max :p, or an average of 100GB / Server.

Even though, our ports aren't even close to maxing.
