What are the alternatiaves for services like snapnames.com
that monitor domain names and wait for them to get released so they are being registered in your name?
Anyone got any experience?

Since this post is titled "Get your domain name back," are you still the registrant for the domain? If you are, you can almost always renew your expired domain at your registrar if it has not yet dropped.

I am not currently the registrant of the domain names I want to register. After they expire, they are made free to register again for the public. For nice looking names you have to be quicker than a leopard to register. With services like snaapnames, they snap it before someone else can.
Yesterday I found a great domain name and it was snapped away just 2 minutes before I ended the complete register procedure at godaddy.com
There sure are services that provide a similar service as snapnames. But don't know of any.... ';)'

If you search the forums, you'll find many discussions about this same topic.
I was intrigued by your posting title as it did not seem like you were simply talking about grabbing expired and dropping names.
There are a dozen or so services that will do this for you - all using different business models and pricing.

thewitt,
Yes looking back at it, I see it is not phrased the way it should be.
I only found this board today and haven't got a chance to look it all over yet ... wow there is even a search on this great website! ';)'

I've just taken over the management of a local band's website. There's another band (in the US I think) with the same name who have the .com TLD and there's a business down in Melbourne who have the .com.au TLD. I did a lookup on this the other day and the .com.au was registered in 1998 but the record doesn't say when it expires or if it's been renewed in the interim, and the database shows the last update as being the same day the domain was registered.
The band's manager has communicated with the registrant already but it seems they're not cooperating, not even giving info. The band would prefer to have the .com.au TLD and I said I'd look into it for them.
If it was a US registrar I'm confident I could get something happening but being an Australian registrar... well, despite being in Australia myself I just never use the Australian services because they're way behind everyone else and seriously unhelpful when you want something done.
Anyone have any experience in this area? The registrant isn't using the domain and apparently has no plans to use the domain. The band is a little miffed.
