Can someone shed some light on this? Is special server software required for some media types (.wma, .rm, .mp3, .mov) ?

(We're a Linux/Apache platform exclusively if that matters.)

To really stream RM on the rtsp protocol you need the software from Real.com called Real Server. This will allow you to stream movies, music or any other type of RM files over the rtsp protocol.

For mp3 there are a lot more choices. Try looking at icecast.org, shoutcast.com, live365.com, darwin streaming server http://www.publicsource.apple.com/projects/streaming/ - There are many options here but shoutcast and darwin are my two choices. Darwin however does more than just mp3. It does movies as well.

Checkout http://www.rtsp.org/ Good luck.
