I registered a domain name with Domainsarefree.com 2 days ago. I took advantage of their very good domain registration price...big mistake.

The domain was registered, I updated the nameservers...The domain didnt point to my host after 24 hours.

Emailed support and they told me that the domain is locked because of potential "fraud" activity and that I would needed to call them. 6 emails later, I called them.

Every single number they have I was on hold for 20 minutes then forwarded to a mailbox.

I spoke to their livechat, first operator stopped talking to me after 10 minutes of wasted time....I opened up a new chat, at this time there was 10 or so minutes left before their billing department closed. I informed the Agent this and he advised me to bare with him. The log of what happend is below:

Thank you for contacting ****** Chat Support. You are now chatting with Technical Specialist 'Ernst'
Ernst: Welcome to ****** Live Chat Support! How may I assist you today?
Simon: I am on hold to your billing dept, for over 30mins now

Simon: and I want this domain activate tonight
Simon: I am calling from the UK and its costing me a fortune

Simon: 7 minutes till close
Ernst: just one second

Ernst: please hold hold
Ernst: I'll check this with our Billing
Simon: ask them to call me please
Simon: I am right near the phone
Ernst: One moment please, I will get back to you shortly.
Simon: they close in 1 minute I am going to be so angry if this domain has been delayed again
Simon: I appreciate it isnt your fault, but this is becoming a joke really fast
Ernst: please fax us a copy of ID and CC on file

Ernst: please try to find one
Simon: please ask Camille to call me
Simon: I am right here next to the phone
Simon: I cant find one its 1:30am here!
Simon: they have my number, if u need it again it is **my number** using your international code to call the UK
Ernst: but we need to have the copy of that said documents first
Ernst: then our Billing will going to call you for verification
Simon: No u do not I have received 5-6 emails today that said I just needed to call
Ernst: You can do it tomorrow
Simon: JUST needed to call
Ernst: they are already close
Simon: ITS COSTING ME MONEY
Simon: Why cant they just call me its that simple, they said they have already done it (apparently)
Ernst: I understand that Simon but there are no Billing Reps that could facilitate the verification of your
Ernst: because our Billing needs a copy of the documents first before they can call you
Simon: Ernst my blood is starting to boil over this, your incompitent billing dept emailed me 6 times today saying they called me and I didnt answer, which is bullsh*t....They then said I simply needed to call you to verify, NOTHING about documents, that was a second option if I couldnt call
Simon: I called, was on hold for near an hour, nobody answered
Simon: nobody answered on ANY of your lines
Ernst: because they are home now
Simon: They were not before 5:30
Simon: I called at half 4
Ernst: please call them tomorrow
Ernst: I'm sure that they will answer their phones tomorrow as soon as they step into their office
Simon: I will be calling tomorrow, I am also going to be calling my lawyer and sending the logs of this conversation and the last conversation I had with other rep...This is fraud if ever I have seen it.
Ernst: ok
Simon: If I do not get that domain name sorted by tomorrow I will be taking legal action against the company.

I have never before dealt with such incompetence to be honest.

I thought I'd share this and avoid to stay away from this company at ALL costs.

I will be calling one more time tomorrow and if I get the same treatment I'll be taking legal action over it.

EDIT: I have never once been required to FAX my Invoices or CC details to a company when it came to domain registration...Nor have my credit card details ever caused a "fraud alert" problem and I have registered MANY domains and used numerous domain registration companies.

At the low price you paid, you SHOULD do as you were told to do and FAX the information. Stop making excuses and DEMANDING that a company do business with you on YOUR terms.

In the future you should pay $35 for the domain name and then maybe you will find someone who will give you that personal touch although I would really doubt it.

And no, I don't work for them. But I have been in the industry tlong enough to know what a person sounds like who wants prime rib for a dollar burger price.

Sounds and looks like a typical support situation to me. If you need them to do anything on your account you will need to identify yourself by faxing the info they've asked for. You could be anyone calling pretending to be you.

Just a thought though. Sometimes the whois info can take up to 72hrs to filter out over the net. You should check again in 48 and 72 hours. I wouldn't have got my knickers in a twist after just 24 hours. What does your account show? The new nameservers?

Also, you should check on the whois server at the place it's actually registered, rather than other whois service.

Defcon, instead of being overly negative and critical, focus on the fact I have made you (or anyone looking for a cheap domain registration...which is why this was posted because I can see a few threads mentioning/recommending this company for domain registration on this forum) aware this company arent good....

Instead of flaming pointlessly, try and be constructive, alright? I didnt need to post this review (what was done ages ago, dunno why you decided to ressurect it), and its irrelevant WHAT I PAID, they run LIVE SUPPORT and it aint SUPPORT. I'll demand what I like if I spend ANY money. And clearly you have no understanding of business practice if you cant see that log as borderline fraud really...The guy was supplying wrong information which to me was intentional. And I am also fairly experienced when it comes to this, thanks.

I can assure you it was not a "typical support situation". I have dealt with many domain registration and hosting companies and I had never had the degree of problems I had with this one.

5 calls later I/we established DNS info on the domain had not been set up correctly, and a nice large charge on my phone bill because they had caused the error on their end.

That said, it has been sorted now (this thread was created a while ago) the domain is working properly.

If you read the support log I posted, that should say it all really.

I will not be using this company again.

A salutory tale. Cheapest is not always best. I'd never heard of them until I read this thread.

I agree stu2, and I've learnt my lesson with this company in particular.

I have registered other domains with "cheap" companies and not experienced these sort of problems, however.

But they got my custom once, granted for a few $...But they will not be getting it again :)
