View Full Version : Other places to register .us domain names?
Rebel 04-25-2002, 10:06 PM Received an e-mail from DirectNIC about the new .us domain name extensions. Wish I was quicker, my last name is Pitcher and it would have been nice to get the .us name of that.
Anyways, I have an idea for another one. But I don't want to pay for 2 years up front b/c I'm not sure what I want to do with it yet. If I wait I might end up losing that one too like I did with my pitcher.us name.
So besides DirectNIC, what other sites are offering the .us names and are they also 2 years or 1 year?
Thanks,
greggish 04-25-2002, 10:09 PM NameCheap.com has them for $8.88/yr, but they also require 2 years. So it's $17.76 for 2 years. 2 years is required by the .US registry so you won't find anyone offering 1 year registrations.
Rebel 04-25-2002, 10:18 PM I have $15.77 in my checking account and $450.00 in my hand. Argh, I really hope my name I want doesn't get taken by tomorrow when I can hit the bank!!! (debit card) :(
thewitt 04-25-2002, 10:23 PM The two year minimum is a Registry requirement. If anyone offers you a domain with only a year registration, they are going to have to register the domain for two years at the Registry - so I'd be careful with the business model - they may own the domain in the second year...

Bullschmidt 04-25-2002, 10:43 PM Interesting, I just bought three .us domains from godaddy.com.
One I preordered before 4/24/2002 and the minimum length was 2 years and the price was $19.90 total for the 2 year period.
And I bought two more on 4/24/2002 and the minimum length was 1 year and the price was $14.95 for each domain name.
thewitt 04-25-2002, 11:18 PM I don't know how they are doing that, since what follows is the language from the Registry/Registrar agreement:
Domain names may be registered for up to 10 years at a fee of $5.50 each year. There is a twoyear minimum registration period for each domain name registered.
Did you check the expiration date of the domains you registered for one year?
Can you post one of those domain names?

MSSTATEBDFAN 04-25-2002, 11:25 PM I also bought a .us domain from GoDaddy for just one year. Maybe the two-year minimum requirement was just for the pre-registration?
I am excited about the .us, I think they will become more popular than .net and .org over the next couple of years.
Bullschmidt 04-25-2002, 11:37 PM The domain is jps.us. I registered that on 4/24/2002 (yesterday) with GoDaddy for one year for $14.95. The same is also true for bullschmidt.biz and bullschmidt.info which I also registered on the same day for the same amount for one year. These don't show up on www.swhois.net yet.
But you're right I looked closer at my list of domains and their expiration dates in GoDaddy and they show as TWO years!!!
So maybe I got something (an extra year) for nothing?!? That's unreal since .biz has been out for awhile and GoDaddy isn't exactly a small, "mom and pop" company (supposedly).
By the way you can check that GoDaddy offers .us, .biz, and .info for 1 year by going to http://www.godaddy.com and then click on "Get a Domain Name" at the top, left part of the screen. Then on the screen that comes up, just look at their price list at the top right. It shows how much you have to pay for each kind of TLD for various time periods such as ONE YEAR.
And of course if you want to keep going with that, you could "almost" register a .us, .biz, or .info domain at GoDaddy for one year and then just not do the final checkout part...
greggish 04-25-2002, 11:47 PM Bullschmidt, it shows up on whois.us
http://www.whois.us/whois-us/servlet/WhoisServlet?WHOIS_QUERY=jps.us&TYPE=DOMAIN&Search=Submit+Query

Rebel 04-26-2002, 03:53 AM Yeah, I used godaddy for the one year deal on the .us name. I can't believe how fast it clinged onto my host site.
http://www.conditionzero.us was the one I wanted and got, it is going to be based on a new game released this summer.
Thank you Bullschmidt, that $14.95 deal worked perfect for me. yay! :D
http://www.conditionzero.com is the official site for the new game.
thewitt 04-26-2002, 10:51 AM Keep in mind that the .us Registry did NOT support an official Landrush period, only Sunrise for trademark holders with a 5 year minimum registration period, so the 2 year minimum was never a Landrush or pre-registration requirement.
It's a Registry requirement - plain and simple.
I don't know if GoDaddy just gave you a free domain year, or if they own your domain at the end of the first year should you choose not to pay up, but it is interesting.
