Retarded question: I have a computer that`s like 4 months old but i don`t want it anymore. It costed $1200 when it was brand new. How much do you think i could get for this thing if i took it somehwere and tried to sell it to some computer store?

Hewlitt Packard (xt963)
-Windows XP
-40 GB
-128 MB SDRAM
-Intel Cereron Processor 1.2 GHZ

The Catch: it doesn`t exactly work anymore though. But can be fixed....i think.

RFHost,

LOL...it just doesn`t work that`s all. Just a minor detail. When i turn it on you can`t even get to the desktop due to error "cannot start windows blabla file is corrupt or missing insert original CD in attempt to repair).

Some computer company sent this unit to me in this condition. But it`s a new computer but doens`t work.

I would go ahead and do the simple repair. That would probally make it sell for a higher price..

umm not sure what it would fetch stateside, in the uk its not a pretty picture, figuring on 1.5 dollars to a pound. and assumung the spec as above, celery 1.2 128 40 gig win xp and branded hp
maybe 500- 550 dollars with a 15 inch monitor and 550-600 with a 17. more for better.
when you can get a brand new durex 800 with 128 ddr 20 gb and a 17 inch monitor for 6-700 easily theres stiff competition.
a local computer store would knock at least 150 bucks off the price above as they have to add their margin on. the exact amount would depend on tax. best bet is classified adds, or the thicker auctions like yahoo, ebay ive noticed things do go cheap cos the buyers are a bit more savy, yahoo seems to attract idiots who will pay more then retail and sellers that r soooo fake.

general condition will affect price as will things like warranty and software included.

good luck and ask a little over so u can be beaten down a little.

I even tried to run a recovery on it yesterday but it didn`t fix it at all. And when you move the mouse back and forth these loud screeching type noises come from the tower & error messages pop up left and right attacking from every angle saying "Hardware Not Found"..."Mouse Not Detected" and then the mouse goes dead. As long as smoke doesn`t come out of the engine i`ll keep it inside the house. As soon as this thing starts ticking...it`s out of here.

Please PM me if interested in making a purchase. Thank You.

Frosty,

Other than some of the minor issues you mentioned, it sounds like a great machine! (But I think I'll pass for now.)

*lol*
wow, that's pretty impressive. The best I ever got was running samspade from the ME partition while in XP. The computer made some spooky noises like you mention, went bluescreen, threw up errors, then rebooted.

fault memory maybe? download memtest make the disk and run it. sounds like a fairly serious error and has reduced the cost to the sum of the working component levels until it gets working :) this is as always considerably less then the cost of a working machine. best of luck on sorting it out.

Get yourself a copy of windows and format your H/D then reinstall windows.
I have had this error many times and had to format.

Or just try and install windows over the old windows

Personally, I'd value it at about ~$300 USD, tops, if it was all working and didn't have any problems. Of course, that's assuming it doesn't have a monitor. It's a HP, for one thing, it's probably a cheap model CPU. The drive isn't that large and it's probably a cheap Maxtor or worse, runs at 33 DMA I bet, and the FSB on the board/RAM/CPU is probably 66 MHZ or so. I bet everything's onboard too, and I just don't want to think about it. I'm not here to talk down about the system, but even in good working order, it's not worth very much. Once you buy it and take it out the door of the store, it loses about $500+ in value right there.

Ah well. I`m taking it somewhere this week. Maybe i`ll repost and let everyone know how much i manage to get for it. I need to fix it first. Sounds like an animal is trapped inside the tower when you move the mouse around. Screeeeech!

:crap:
