i wanted to compile a list of providers that allow you to mask your whois information (some thing like godaddy's domainbyproxy service) mainly for .com/.net/.co.uk
if anyone could reccomend some good places that would be brilliant!

tucows allow that too. You can list them down or search for their many resellers.

Domain masking is a GTLD thing - it does not work for .uk.
If you are a private individual and you have registered your domain for private non-commercial use Nominet will allow you to withhold your postal address from the Whois. Your name will always appear in the Whois, and if you give a false name your domain is liable to cancellation (as you enter into a contract with Nominet when you register your domain and Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck cannot enter into contracts). Your email address and phone number never appear in the .uk Whois.
