ok, I am having a crazy time here. I have a catalyst switch and I am trying to connect to the terminal. No the 2800 dosent have a regular rj-45 for consle, it hasn a db-9 female. So I have 2 rj-45 to db-9 connecters(one for computer and one for switch) and I have the rollovercable. All this equipment works because I tested it on my router. All I can ever get to come up is this ATQ0Z0 (means to connect I think) then it gets followed by this ATQ0H0 (means to hangup I think). Anyhoot, I need help, cisco docs online really suck in my opinion for this.

Isn't that port meanth for use with a modem ?
As I see the commands originating from the switch, they look to me as if they are Hayes command set.
Try to hookup a external modem & dial-up to that modem.
Maybe it helps.

David,
If you connect the RJ45 or fibre connector to your LAN, you should be able to telnet to the box. If you were able to set your IP address already of course.
Might be a dumb question, but what happens if you hit enter for a couple of times while it's connecting ?
Or you may want to look into the config of your terminal software. The fact that you can actually see the catalyst reply to your connection is good, but yeah, if it dies...
good luck,
carl

Ya, nothing is preset. I feel sortof dumb right now. Honestly I do not know why I was trying to connect from computer to switch with rj45 to db9 connectors, when the intructions say to use a rs 232 cable. So I bought a rs 232, got the adaptor to so I could get it to work on my comp. Of course now it still dosent work, but I am still stuck with another problem that I addressed on a different post. Also I did try to hit enter, and I tried the cisco auto config program, which detects if a device is connected via a com port, so there is a problem, just dont know what yet.
Thanks for your help

Simple: Make a jumper between pins 1 and 6 on one of the DB9 adapters. I used a piece of copper wire jammed into the pins, and jammed it into the serial port on the switch. Worked great! This is because 1 and 6 are not looped on the connector, which prevents the Cisco from communicating correctly. Creating the loop makes it work.
