Hello friends,

Has any one used WHM/CPanel on FreeBSD ?

I am not too comfortable with Linux after tasting the stability of FreeBSD 4.4 for 3 months now

Thanks
Balaji

Unfortunately the FreeBSD version of CPanel still has a lot of bugs and glitches, so we have decided to set up new servers with Linux until Cpanel fully supports FreeBSD, or when HostGUI is released.

This is really unfortunate, as FreeBSD is overall a better and more stable system.

Thanks Urban,

I get quite a few requests for reseller plans on WHM/CPanel but I would rather have a stable OS than reseller sales if it comes to a choice.

Cheers

Just hang on there, I'm sure Cpanel will be more stable on FreeBSD in no time

Thanks CRego,

I have no option but to hang around! I like FreeBSD too much to change

Yup me too. Bsd has givin us no problems(unlike redhat 7.2) so thats all we run now. Now a decent panel on it....that would make it all better ;)

A friend of mine tried running CPanel on a FreeBSD box and it presented nothing but trouble... HostGUI looks like it will be the first great control panel for FreeBSD

Could someone enumerate the troubles you all have had with WHM/Cpanel on FreeBSD? Sure, it wasn't perfect out of the box but it works fine for me on several machines without issue.

Perhaps I can lend a hand.

I'm not sure exactly as it wasn't my box, but he seemed to be complaining mostly about exim

I wouldn't say FreeBSD is so much stable then Linux. It depends on your system configuration. If you custom config Linux systems the way you want it, and get rid of all the BS then it will work very good. Right now redhat puts too much BS in the OS that causes bugs and other problem. FreeBSD doesn't do that kind of stuff so it's more stable. I've heard of linux systems running for month without downtime, can't get better uptime then that. BSD is not so different from Linux anway.

Heh... read a book on the linux kernel and the BSD kernel design and implementation book and tell me otherwise. :)

I had a problem with exim, too. The box was originally running plesk and the plesk installer totally ignores the freebsd sendmail wrapper and overwrites the wrapper binary. Cpanel tries to use the wrapper, modifies the wrapper config and barfs because plesk broke it previously. Nice, eh?

Well if CPanel on FreeBSD so buggy you might do us a favor and beta test it for them...im thinking of doing that soon, they are pretty good at following up on bugs. Plus they might give you a free licence...
