I need your opinion. Suppose I'm making a commercial site to market something, say apples. Which do you think is a better domain name -- applemarket.org or applemarket.us (.com and .net are taken)? Which would you trust more, which would you be more likely to believe is a dependable company?

i dont think .org is appropriate for a business, but .org can indicate a more established website.

I would look at .info and .biz before .us

How about .ws? I don't like .org for business, doesn't really fit. I guess if .com and .net are already taken, .us (and .ws) are reasonable alternatives.

I hate the .biz domain, would never use it. Well, maybe the only use that I could see for it would be selling business services or franchises. Other than that, it sounds sleasy. I can't imagine seeing any of the following:
www.microsoft.biz
www.ibm.biz
... unless these were set up as sites for their business partners. That would be a reasonable use.

I can't stand the .biz extension. This .us extension has potential though.

If your apple selling business is primarily US based, I would go with applemarket.us It looks more professional than applemarket.org, and less cheesy than applemarket.biz

.org sites, I always expect to see a non-profit business, whether intentional or not by the business owner ;)

Thanks for the replies. Just to answer some of the questions, .biz and .info are also taken, leaving just a choice of .us,.org,.tv (blech), .ws, and .cc. Personally, I would never use .ws, .tv, or .cc for a business/professional site, leaving just .us and .org.

I agree with the above posters, .biz sounds sleazy to me. Sort of like when you misspell the name as well (kewlmoosic.biz anybody?). Otherwise, my conundrum is as hostjet points out -- .org sounds more established, more professional, more official to me, but many people feel odd about a .org site that is making a profit.

Perhaps I will just register both :)

Thanks,
Matt

I had a similar decision to make. A church wanted gbfc.org but .org was already taken and .us just became available so that did the trick.

But gbfc.biz was a close second choice (just kidding on this last part)!

Personally, I would never use .ws, .tv, or .cc for a business/professional site, leaving just .us and .org. What's wrong with .ws? I think it's pretty well suited for most purposes. WS - Web Site. Also .cc is pretty neutral and could be a decent substitute for .com. The main problem with .ws and .cc is that they aren't .com/.net/.org. But since those original TLDs have been pretty much mined out, we've got to go with the new ones. I personally think that .ws is a better option than .us, because .us limits you to a US market.

On the other hand, I agree with you that .tv is a waste of time. That is, unless your site is a television show site, or your company name is "Technical Vexations", or "Thematic Visions". Even then, the .tv TLD automatically puts you in the television category.

I like .cc - but I can't find anyone in au that resells them. I want an .au - but Australia's Domain Registry thingee is uber gay.

If I may add my opinion, it may be best to get the us, info, and biz extensions, if they are all still available, and then you will have the luxury of deciding which is best as times goes on. I would not recommend .org, .ws, .cc, or .ws.

whtpost, matt said the .biz and .info were already taken

However I agree, i would not personally use .ws, .tv or .cc

It would be better to try and use a completely different name altogether than use one of those extensions.

ozwebhost.net will probably trade in aussie dollars for a .cc, if that's what you're after..

sorry hostjet. I read that too, but after I posted.

I agree about getting another domain name. Starting a site with a domain name that someone else has the .com to it is risky.

It may be best in the long run, business wise, to do some thinking and come up with a new name that has the .com still available.

Thanks all for your replies so far. I'm beginning to think like you, whtpost and hostjet, that just doing a different name with the .com would be best. It would certainly be interesting to see how much of the general public are even aware there is more than .com. I know I myself have accidentally typed .com instead of .org or .net on a few occasions. I guess right now it is hard to tell if .us will become really big, like .uk, or will just fizzle, like .info
