Hey domain name addicts:

The .us domain names went live today. That is a pretty good TLD and will be filled up pretty quickly.

I grabbed a whole bunch of nice names. So many good names were available today, that I felt like it was 1994 all over again.

Go ahead and get yourself a few good names. Run a vBulletin site for a couple of months and then sell the whole thing for a few thousand dollars. Sounds good to me!!

It will never be 1994 again.

We run DiscountDomainRegistry.com (http://DiscountDomainRegistry.com) and the .US domain names have been on fire!

The problem is that the .US registry is being pounded at the present moment and it goes down sporadically.

I've seen a lot of registered names by people who DO NOT LIVE IN THE US esp some really good names. I thought only US Citizens could register names. Hmmmm wonder if anyone was even checking or maybe this is just to give us a warm cozy feeling about having our own country code.

I highly doubt that this will actually be policed. Most of the .US registrations I am seeing on DiscountDomainRegistry.com (http://DiscountDomainRegistry.com) are actually based in the US. If a domain dispute ever comes up over a .US, I would think that a US Inc. would have the upper hand.

US trademark holders were given a Sunrise period benefit :D

The Nexus requirements will be enforced. People who illegally registered domain names will lose them when the Registry catches up to them. It's a DoC requirement, and the government takes this one very seriously.

thewitt, just curious. What happens to the opportunists that bought domains and plan to sell them? I mean, if they sell the domain before the Nexus is enforced, what would happen?

Or, the bottom line is: Is there a reseller market for .US domains?

The onus is on each registrar to do veracity checks and anyone who managed to register a .us using a non USA address or whose situation does not comply with the rules will lose the domain eventually.. also they changed the rules a bit..

i.e., "A natural person whose primary place of domicile is in the US or any of its possessions," is no longer qualified to register domain names under usTLD.

Speculation will occur of course, because it hasn't been discouraged, but anyone buying a 'second hand' .us domain will/should check the bona fides of the original registrant otherwise the transfer/sale *may* be invalid.. due to the original contract to register being void..

I don't know, but it will be interesting to watch.

What happens to the domain that you sell to someone who does not pass the Nexus requirements? I think he simply loses it if the Registry catches him...
