View Full Version : My Adventures with PHPWebhosting

Well, I've been with PHP WebHosting.com since November. We had good service in the beginning when we were opening our site. As of the last six weeks, we have been experiencing more and more frequent outages. Currently, I am working with Greg to get moved to a different server, and hopefully they will be able to retain my business. My fellow staff members and I have been considering alternative hosting due to the recent adventures. I have referred 2 people to them, and their(the referred people) servers run better than the one I am currently on(this is before the move). Just to show you how it's been, I've put in 4 support tickets for outages (a couple have been 2+ hours) this month. After reading some posts here, I find out that someone answering technical support tickets is mainly working with Sales. I'll post back with how the move goes.

Right now, the jury is still out on whether I would recommend PHPWebhosting again.

They offer unmetered bandwidth on a shared web hosting account. No matter what anyone says, in terms of virtual hosting accounts there isn't really any difference between unmetered and unlimited.

Sorry for bringing up an old thread, but it seems that moving servers hadn't cured their problems. Hell, they are telling me to switch forum software because "will always have problems due to growth"

Baaah...ran fine for 8 months..

This might not be too far from the truth. What forum software is it? If it is cgi-based, many host won't even allow it now days because of resource issues.

You might have been on a server with few sites. As it filled, more people were competing over the resources and maybe your forum tips the scale and causes resource issues.

I'm using a cgi based forum software for a reason. Also, I'm barely running a load on the server...10 concurrent users isn't much of a load right now.

Well it's been almost nine months since your last post.. I am assuming everything has been going good since then..

As stated before, you are lucky they even allow it. We don't even let people host cgi-based forums on shared servers. Also, you have no way of knowing what the resource use is like unless you can view the server in root.

While it sure doesn't sound like a high use abuse, you never can tell. Like I stated, maybe the server is filled with sites and even that much cgi use is causing trouble. Who knows.

Billy - They put a reaper on the server in July. It was killing my forums during normal operation with only 4 concurrent users. There is a specific reason why I'm using a cgi based forum software. I've been dealing with phpwebhosting since July over Internal Server Errors. We have had 87 ISE's in 12 days this month. And I've had at least 4 or 5 reported today.

I switched servers in May due to the numerous multi hour outages, but instead I get plagued with Internal Server Errors.

My forums are small compared to ones I've seen.

I would ask to be moved to a new server then. If it doesn't work out, there are numerous host here who would like a new customer. :)

I would like to offer my experience with phpwebhosting. I saw good review of that site and decided to try it as my old hosting was awful. I registered for a account and it was working great. I tetsed it for 3 days and when I was sure it was working properly I moved my site to their server. About a week later I suddenly found that my site was down and I could not login to the control panel. And since the support system is available only when you are logged in I could not even send them a email. After repeated emails to support@reg.... , after about one week I get a response from them that they deleted my account (without even sending 1 notification email) because they could not call me to verify my card (although they had no problem charging me from my credit card company, it's not like my cc company refused or something).

I would rate them 0 for this.

I've been with phpwebhosting for over two years. I haven't had a single bad experience with them. With phpwebhosting, it's a love/hate relationship. I have heard people saying it's the best hosting company ever, and others say they've had a very poor experience with them. =T

Although they do have unmetered bandwidth, you must stay within 5gb per month. If you go a little over a few times, they won't charge. That's all they mean by "unmetered". (it's all there on their webpage)

Anyhow, as it was my very first webhosting company, I would give them at least a 9/10. ;)

I was refered to Phpwebhosting by GeeksSubZero. My site gets no where near the traffic of his site and has had no major problems so far.

I can attest to the problems they were having, and the new host seems to be faster.

I personally am happy with Phpwebhosting, but I don't know if they can handle large websites.

I've had nothing but headaches with PHPWebhosting for the past three months. I have a UBB board that had been working fine, until this summer, when my members started getting "Internal Server Errors" all over the place. I sent tech support a ticket about the problem, and they told me someone was over-using server resources and that they were doing their best to track the offender(s) down. That was three months ago. nothing has changed. I've written to them at least a dozen timers about the problem (btw, my board has a small membership & modest traffic, so it's not on my end).

Finally, I got fed up a few weeks ago and decided to try a vBulletin board; I thought maybe the PHP wouldn't be affected by the problem like CGI is. The new board worked great at first, but within a week I was getting horrible lags and DNS errors. I just wrote to them again and requested to be moved to a different server. It's been two days and no response.

phpwebhosting can handle my sites with 15k page views daily with no problems. It's using 80GB bandwidth on last December 2002. Well, my site is all custom php scripts with no forum, message board or something like that. Busy forum eats up server resources... IRC is great, why use forum?

I want to see this month, the bandwidth usage should be around 100-120 GB by looking at the trend. So, my question is, when phpwebhosting decided to pull the plug of my sites...

Hopefully I will receive (at least 3 days) notice prior the account cancellation (if they decided to kill my site). But I'm more than happy using phpwebhosting service. It's unmetered ok? (well as long as you dont upload movies and suddenly your site is using alot of traffic.. that's what I call abusing and I'm pretty sure your account will be terminated in no time).
