![]() | View Full Version : Did anyone register any .US domains today? greggish 04-24-2002, 06:45 PM I registered one... JobBoard.US...not sure I'll use it though. clemzonguy 04-24-2002, 07:38 PM How are we supposed to know if we got the names or which ones are taken. The whois search pulls up nothing. Even on numerous websites. thewitt 04-24-2002, 07:45 PM The whois will be updated tomorrow. Your Registrar found out today, in real time, so ask them. -t markblair 04-24-2002, 08:10 PM I'm currently on hold right now with Dotster trying to find out when I can use the two I pre-registered. I won both bids and thought they would be available yesterday. I checked then and found out that the registrars weren't submitting the bids until this morning. That would have happened at 7:00am PT. I may be rushing but I would think the pre-registrations would go through before any live registrations occur. Live registrations are now available. Just had to leave a message with Dotster due to high volume of calls. Seems everyone has questions...:) clemzonguy 04-24-2002, 08:24 PM I think it's just taking more time to divvy out the spoils from all this. It's clear that many people will reap large rewards off pre-registration, bidding, and actual registrations and other fees. If they are taking live registations then why do common names I know are taken show up as available. That doesn't constitute live registrations to me. Only one i've gotten that comes up is business.us I guess I didn't get my name after all. I'd be interested to see which names were registered by which hosts and in what quantity. I thought I had a great chance winning my bid and being at the top of the queue for submission. markblair 04-24-2002, 08:27 PM Even though Dotster and others are taking live registrations, both of mine are not available. That leaves me hope and according to their system, I was the highest bidder. However, still no info. I checked Neustar's website (the company running the .US registry) and they show nothing stating a slowdown or anything of the sort. And of course, no contact information for them. Just will have to wait on Dotster or on the names actually becoming mine. Neustar site to run a whois search on .US domains: http://www.about.us thewitt 04-24-2002, 10:34 PM The whois for .us will not be updated until tomorrow. The whois is NOT, even when it's updated, where Registrars check to see if a domain is available - they use the Registry API. Whois data is not guaranteed to be accurate. As for winning your domain at Dotster, they are only one of the Registrars who were competing for names at the opening of the Registry. No guarantee that you received your domain just because you were high bid at Dotster. Any one of the other Registrars - as well as anyone using a real time interface at 10:00 this morning - could have grabbed it. As for finding out if you received your domain or not, your Registrar knows, and knew in real time starting when the Registry itself opened for real time registrations this morning. There was no official pre-registration Landrush period for .us domains - a number of Registrars simply queued up names and processed them automatically when the Registry opened this morning. It's entirely possible that all the good names were snatched up by someone manually registering at a real time interface while the Registrars were processing their queues. The OpenSRS queue took approximately 2 1/2 hours to process. -t gounder 04-24-2002, 10:58 PM Hi, I had registered a US domain today "fiji.us" through bulkregister.com and went through fairly quickly. I am able to access and modify domain information witout problem too. It also appears to be live now and pointed to my other domain. ----------------- Gounder Raj gounder.net greggish 04-24-2002, 11:14 PM Who did everybody use to register their .US today? I used NameCheap ...only $17.76 for 2 years and JobBoard.US is already live. That was pretty quick. IceDogg 04-24-2002, 11:24 PM I can't believe so many people fell for the "bidding" scam Dotster and other registrars cooked up. I saw some pretty outrageous rates out there (and I checked EVERY registrar listed on the Neustar.com site). All the bidding did was raise you to the top of that specific registrars queue. Didn't have any effect on the other competing registrars. I paid $8.95 per year for 2 .us domains via godaddy and got both of them. No complaints here. clemzonguy 04-24-2002, 11:28 PM Where was/is there a real time interface that someone could have registered a name? I knew of none. I tried to access them on many sites and they either took them off after the preregistration period or were not available to begin with at all. Some sites looked kinda sketchy to me such as one demanding 60 dollars non-refundable even if not successful. 000domains.com for instance has taken it off the site where you can't register a name so how is that "real time". Goddaddy seemed to have every name under the sun taken when I do a search even rather benign names. Even if i don't get my name there are always catchy gay names like beamrobots.com or cheesyeddy.com that would be a great brand name than just a simple key word. Hey wait why wasn't namecheap listed as registering names on the us list??? They go through Enom I thought. If I knew that I would have just used them b/c I register my other names through them now. markblair 04-24-2002, 11:33 PM I'm starting to become really disappointed and concerned. My disappointment is that I fell for Dotster's tactics on "bidding" for the two .US domains. I could have easily waited until today and already have them working. Also, I had no clue that if someone bid on the same domain with another registrar that they could beat me out. That is not a proper way to run this kind of thing, in my opinion. I'm concerned because I can't find any clue as to if I own the two .US domains or not. I've ran whois searches all over the web and no results are found. That could be good meaning nobody registered it this morning but I still don't have any info. I checked to see if I was charged yet and I haven't been. I also haven't received any messages from Dotster regarding either getting the domains or not. I like Dotster and have no other complaints but I really thought that the only way to guarantee a .US domain was to bid on it before the end of the Sunrise period. I still hope that I get both domains but I have learned from this and will stay away from all future domain bidding schemes. gounder 04-24-2002, 11:47 PM I generally prefer “godaddy.com” to register my domains, but every domain I typed in says its already registered. So I used “register.com” to see if the domain I wanted was available. There it was, the names I wanted was not even registered. I did not want to register with "register.com" due to overprice nor take a chance with “godaddy.com” due to domain already taken, so I went with “bulkregister.com” and registered from there. It was easy and actually did register the name I wanted. To quickly get the name I wanted, I had just registed with default bulkregister name servers and 3 hours later I was able to modify the domain contact information and setup the proper name server information. I was rather impressed with bulkregister.com. They have also improved there Domain Management control panel also. You guys are correct about the bidding scam, I almost went for that. I paid $30 / 2 year registration. ------------------ Raj Gounder Gounder.net gounder 04-24-2002, 11:56 PM Duplicate message Sorry!! ------------------ Raj Gounder Gounder.net markblair 04-25-2002, 12:07 AM Well, my two are definitely not available. I've checked nearly 10-20 different registrars and all of them show the domains as not being available. Of course the whois search doesn't work yet so I can't get the full info. I will just wait until tomorrow and see what Dotster has to say. They're pretty good with getting a response to all support requests within no more than 24 hours. Thanks for all the tips everyone. IntraHost 04-25-2002, 12:53 AM I bought hostmy.us today, and another domain. Any offers? markblair 04-25-2002, 03:52 AM Well, it looks like the whois info is now becoming available for .US domains. I checked both of the domains I registered and one is showing up as owned by Dotster. This happened before when I registered a .info domain so I'm not worried. Unless someone else using Dotster registered the same exact domain, then that one is mine. The second, however, is showing up as someone else's. This proves the point made earlier that even though I was the highest bidder on the domain, it didn't matter. It's a bit disappointing but on a side note I decided on a different domain name to replace the one that was lost and it is already setup and working. The e-mail works as I added it to my current hosting plan and I'm sure the DNS will replicate shortly. Oh' well, you win some and you lose some... elleW 04-25-2002, 07:11 AM I grabbed about two dozen .us names today, 9.99 each :) adland 04-25-2002, 07:51 AM I checked both of the domains I registered and one is showing up as owned by Dotster. This happened before when I registered a .info domain so I'm not worried. How long did it take for them to change the record to reflect your ownership before? I ask because I'm seeing the exact same thing with Enom now. markblair 04-25-2002, 09:44 AM Originally posted by adland How long did it take for them to change the record to reflect your ownership before? I still haven't received an email stating that the domain is mine though so I will wait to bug them until that time. IceDogg 04-25-2002, 09:48 AM Originally posted by IntraHost I bought hostmy.us today, and another domain. Any offers? Hmmm... I'd give you about $1.19 for hostmy.us. wwww 04-25-2002, 10:33 AM I'd give you 2.35 :D IceDogg 04-25-2002, 12:35 PM Originally posted by wwww I'd give you 2.35 :D Dammit... OK, $2.36. successful 04-25-2002, 02:11 PM You can use this WHOIS to check .US ownership and availibility: DiscountDomainRegistry.com (http://DiscountDomainRegistry.com/whois/) We have been registering .US domains for our customers and they have been going like hot cakes. Much much better than .biz, .info and .name. markblair 04-25-2002, 04:23 PM Using Dotster I now have complete control over both of the .US domains that I registered. The only one that was showing all of Dotster's information was the one I bid on. I now have the ability to change the contact information as well as DNS entries. As a matter of fact, I changed the DNS entries and it replicated immediately. I was able to access the one-page site I setup via a new browser window. Not too bad in my opinion... IntraHost 04-25-2002, 10:55 PM Dudes... I paid like 9.50 for hostmy.us. I have to get at LEAST that. :) thewitt 04-25-2002, 11:08 PM Originally posted by IntraHost Dudes...
