Hi,
I am interested in your opinion on which server would be the most suitable for VPS or Virtual hosting accounts. Preferably something in the 1U environment.
Your replies are greatly appreciated.
Thanks

All depends.. Are you new to nix and still learning.. Go with a Cobalt.. Slow but they do a pretty good job of what they are made for.. If you allready know your stuff either Compaq or Dell

I have worked with Cobalts before and you’re right, They are pretty easy to deal with. But I am also looking into the Sun Fires. I am still learning this whole hosting biz and I think I might just get the hang of using the Sun Fires.

Oh....wrong show.
Get a good strong Unix/Linux box with a good control panel and you we be off to a good start. Get it from a reputable provider of dedicated servers. I personally prefer Redhat OS, but many others prefer FreeBSD. Likewise, I prefer CPanel, but others prefer Ensim, Plesk, or HSphere.

Dont get a cobalt unless you want to throw your money in the trash. Sun is killing off the cobalt line to market their own line of sun servers. Not to mention that the cobalt os is really buggy and if you need to do advanced stuff it can be very limiting. You are much better off getting a linux box and getting one of your friends to help you install cpanel or somthing easy on it.

For web hosting, I would recommend to avoid sun products. Many hosting solutions and control panels don't support solaris.
And also, bigger boxes are not necessariily better. In most cases, it is better to have several moderate boxes, rather than a few huge boxes.
