View Full Version : Yahoo vs GoDaddy vs RegisterFly: Which Domain Registrar?
Troyus 12-03-2005, 11:09 PM I am looking for some advice on where I should register my domain name. I am stuck between using Yahoo, GoDaddy and RegisterFly.
Yahoo is selling domains for 2.99$/year, with the option to make it private for 9$/year.
GoDaddy sells for $8.95/year with the option to make it private for 6.95$/year.
RegisterFly offers for 9.99$/year with the option to make it private 1$/year.
I've heard great things about all three companies. I noticed that GoDaddy does the best job at limiting access to WHOIS info (your name, address, number). It forces whoever is looking to go to their site first, and then type in a Code to view the info (and this is without the site being private). Yahoo and RegisterFly WHOIS info can be easily viewed.
Also if you leave your domain public, is the amount of spam (email and letter) and telemarketing that bad?
Which one of the three I mentioned is best? I will be registering a .com address, and possibly some other TLD's with the same domain name (and have them forward traffic to the main site).
a1nerd 12-04-2005, 12:21 AM Yahoo is a reseller don't buy there services. I and alot of people have been takin for a joyride by them and have lost lots of money. That $2.99 will charge you much more in frustration. Spend a extra few dollars and go with Godaddy.

13Gigatons 12-04-2005, 12:21 AM I would choose Godaddy myself. I just have more faith in there service and if this domain is for a business I wouldn't want to chance it with Yahoo or RegisterFly.
dmaven 12-04-2005, 12:25 AM I have well over 7500 domains with RegisterFly (yes 7500) overall very pleased. They offer Privacy protection for free now(do not know how long the promo is for)

How have you lost money?
Moogabytes 12-04-2005, 03:52 AM GoDaddy has probably sold more than the others! And how did you get 7500 domains? You could earn over $35k with them!
Disgruntled 12-04-2005, 04:50 AM Of the three I would choose Godaddy.
Yahoo can sometimes actually work well, but problems seem to be common, and support is terrible.
Registerfly usually works. I think one catch with the cheap privacy protection is less control over forwarding options.
You probably would get a discount on the first year with Godaddy by buying the registry and privacy protection together. The Domains-by-Proxy gives you user-controlled options to forward all, forward spam-filtered, or forward none from your whois-displayed Domains-by-Proxy email address. They provide a separate login number for this, which is a bit of a cumbersome system. Godaddy's telephone support is pretty good. I have seen posts by others who are not so satisfied with their email support.
Namecheap is worth considering, too.
Yes, privacy protection is worthwhile if the email address on file is spam-free and you want to keep it that way. Whois displayed email addresses do get harvested by spammers. Whois displayed home addresses are often harvested by unscrupulous registrars, who will try to trick you into transferring to them.
a1nerd 12-04-2005, 05:05 AM My domain names don't work so i can't develop them for my clients. My clients paid me money to develop them and i cant transfer nor do anything with my clients names.
How have you lost money?
koushibasaki 12-04-2005, 05:46 AM I have not tried RegisterFly. I will definitely choose GoDaddy if given the choice between Godaddy and Yahoo! However, last week I registered 20 domain names with Yahoo! for the first time to take advantage of their US$2.99 per year. I registered all of them for 5 years which is equivalent to 2 years at Godaddy. I was kind of addicted with registering domain names at Yahoo! since it is the cheapest in the history of domain name that I am aware of. Exactly one week later I tried to register another 3 domain names with Yahoo! and the price in their shopping cart shows that it was US$2.99 per year , so I selected 5 years but when I wanted to check out I was surprised that the price was nearly US$50. There was a message there telling me that US$2.99 is for new customers only. So I decided to register them with Godaddy since I was afraid that these domains would be taken by others. I regretted that I didn't register more earlier. Now I have to look for my brother's credit card to register more.
So, if you want to register with Yahoo! make sure you take the time to think what domain to register before you sign up. Their renewal price is higher than Godaddy.
If you want to register a few domain names with Godaddy here is the trick that will save you money. Register one domain name first and key in SAVETEN. You will get 10% discount. After you checked out and made payment you will be given 30% discount for any purchase within 30 minutes after your first sales confirmation.
I hope this will help because I always forgot to do this.

Well, I have about 25 and am slowly moving them away. Since I've started to use RegFly, I've encountered:
- double charges on my credit card (took AGES (well, over 40 days!!!) for them to resolve and only WHT member's RegFly help actually helped);
- not working registration for ccTLDs (have tried .it and .be);
- not working email forwarding of their whois protection service (dmaven and everybody else - please try it and you'll see - I am absolute positive that about at least 40-50% of them aren't forwarding anything);
- customer service that ... can't be called by that name. It's some parody...
However, I must admit the only thing I liked in RegFly is their control panel. I've never seen so many functions and possibilities at any other registrar.
To answer your question... From the 3 registrars you mention, go with GoDaddy. It's your best choice (out of 3) if you don't plan to spamvertise your domain and/or sell it in a foreseeable future.
BUT being in your place I would go either with Network Solutions (if your pockets are deep), Moniker (if one of your pockets is deep) or NameCheap (if all of them are flat). ;)
Good luck!
Stan Marsh 12-04-2005, 07:43 AM I was kind of addicted with registering domain names at Yahoo! since it is the cheapest in the history of domain name that I am aware of.
Yahoo had a $1.99/yr price earlier this year. ;)
DDLForum 12-04-2005, 07:53 AM Godaddy for me, as long as you don't buy there crappy hosting with it ;)
solidar 12-04-2005, 08:21 AM I have used Godaddy and RegisterFly and both I like. If you had to choose go with RegisterFly. The interface is so much better especially if you need to manage domains for clients. Support for both is good and steady. I like that they send both coupons in email which makes registration cheaper.
Stan Marsh 12-04-2005, 08:42 AM If you had to choose go with RegisterFly.
I must agree here, except I'll add:
- if you have no problem with double charges;
- if you are ABSOLUTELY sure you'll NOT use their 'support'.
vexdesigner 12-04-2005, 08:51 AM i'll go for godaddy

1 - Having been a customer for many years and NEVER was overcharged
2 - Support has always been great. larger accounts like mine now even get my own account manager
They would not have 1.3 millions names and hundreds of thousands of customers unless they were good(and they are). Also understand that not every registrar is for everyone. Some offer more personalized service and someothers provide better automation or interfaces. It is a matter of personalized preferences. See what works for you.
Stan Marsh 12-04-2005, 09:17 AM 1 - Having been a customer for many years and NEVER was overcharged
It looked ok for me also. But... Once I've tried to look over my charges, one at a time. Rest assured - 3 out of 10 were not legitimate. The ticket took 42 days (!!!) to resolve. Infact, it NEVER was resolved (I just closed it a week after resolution in my favour), I just got help from WHT member RegFly.
2 - Support has always been great. larger accounts like mine now even get my own account manager
In my case they were either not very helpful or I just got no replies at all (like in above 42-days case). Is this what you call 'great' support?
I have nothing personal against anybody, including Registerfly. BUT if they want my money and business, they must EARN it by hard work, NOT by doublecharging my creditcard.
dmaven 12-04-2005, 09:20 AM I I have nothing personal against anybody, including Registerfly.
Judging by your posts I would respectfully disagree
:crying:
Stan Marsh 12-04-2005, 09:54 AM Judging by your posts I would respectfully disagree
dmaven, it's really nothing personal - it's strictly business.
Troyus 12-04-2005, 11:39 AM Wow lots of replies, all of which have great advice (some of which contradicts ;)).

Well, I don't plan on spamvertising or selling my domain, so that wouldnt be an issue. I just named those threee companies because those were ones I had heard were the best. I just checked your other recommendations, and NameCheap look pretty good. The prices are cheap, especially when you buy several at once and they offer whois protection for free. I just wondered how good their service is: any downtimes, whois protection is good? etc...
So basically... GoDaddy vs NameCheap. (and i'm still open to other suggestions of course, including the ones mentioned in this thread :)).
Also I noticed that with NameCheap you can pay by paypal, which I would like. Do the others offer this to?
Patrick 12-04-2005, 02:00 PM GoDaddy.
I've been using them for years and have never had a problem, and they are generally helpful if I have any questions.
On a side note, Yahoo is great if you want a cheap domain name that you don't care about... or want to give it to your girlfriend! :)
Stan Marsh 12-04-2005, 02:12 PM I should agree with you, Pat H, that GoDaddy is overall OK if you follow their rules and want a stabil, down-to-the-earth registrar. I have had one particularly not very pleasant incident (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=465389) with them, but overall they have performed very well. I am still keeping the most valuable of my domains there although I think about moving them over to Moniker. Or Namecheap. Or NetSol if my boss (i.e. me) will rise my salary. :)
TomorrowHosting 12-04-2005, 03:52 PM GoDaddy is definately the best domain service. I use them for all of my domains!
Disgruntled 12-04-2005, 04:18 PM Godaddy for me, as long as you don't buy there crappy hosting with it ;)
I have one domain hosted by Godaddy, and I have found it to be very reliable. Maybe it's the dumb luck of being on the good server or not. When I used hosting by Registerfly there was a lot of down time.
My site is a very simple one, so it doesn't provide a test of how well more advanced features or services would work with Godaddy.
