If I register a domain name, do I still need a host? Could someone explain to me hosts/domain names? If I register a domain name on a place like wwwregisterfly.com, do I have to buy a hosting plan? If I have my own domain name, can I have any amount of files on that name, or do I need some hosting plan as well?

Don't look at me like an idiot, I'm just a beginner. :bawling:

:D

You can buy a domain name but you will not be able to have a website unless you purchase hosting. Say you buy xyz.com from registerfly then all that will happen is if you type www.xyz.com it will probably justy go to a page that will have an ad or something for registerfly. This is called "parking" a domain. This is OK if you just want to hold on to a domain for future use. To actually have a website at www.xyz.com you need hosting so that you have space to publish it to. So once you register your domain xyz.com you must find hosting, once you find hosting you ask your host what there nameservers are. From there you go back to registerfly and point your xyz.com domain to there nameservers and from there you upload your website using the information your hosting provider gave you to upload your site and your off.. There are several plans for hosting you can choose from if this is going to be just a small personal site which is sounds like all you need it a small amount of storage.. Good luck

In order for your domain which is xyz.com to point to your hosting provider's servers you must logon to your control panel at registerfly and you will see a option for nameservers which is where you put it your hosters nameservers. for example if you were hosting with 20dollarhost.com :) there name servers would most likely be ns1.20dollarhost.com and ns2.20dollorhost.com (I hope I am not giving a plug here ) and after about 2 days the internet will pick up that your xyz domain goes to 20dollarhost and when it receives requests for www.xyz.com it will point to them. Hope this better expalins it.
