View Full Version : Cheap Hosts
Falco1199 04-24-2002, 04:05 PM I'm looking for a cheap host, in which I can have the URL www.myname.com and without banners/popups. By cheap I mean the least possible amount of money; I think I've found one that's $20 bucks a year, but I'm hoping I can go lower than that. Does anyone know of a good place?
...I'm also testing my sig... :D

Read up on this.. Cheap is not always better.. For 20 bucks a year I would keep my fingers crossed that the company is going to be around in a year. I would also suggest that if you do go with a >20 per year host you do not register a domain with them as they have been known to sometimes hold hostage domains registered with them. As I told you in your last post you should be able to find some good hosting for under 5.00 a month.. But if you need cheaper than 20 bucks a year you are better off sticking with Geocities or something and get a javascript to kill the pop ups. .
IdioTeQue 04-24-2002, 04:42 PM i just did some research to find a host and stumbled across a free host that got great reviews i think it was called irepublics.com or something like that. offered a free 33MB site with email addresses as well. most probably has some ads on it.
otherwise like the above poster said you can find some deals for about 5-7 bucks a month with reputable hosters for a small personal site.
cnet.com recommends catalog.com for reliable cheap hosting for small sites.
i know a site at micd hosting (http://micdhosting.com)..
but i don't know how reliable they are.
well.. one thing i have to say is.. how cheap do you want it to be? 20 bucks a year is as cheap as it gets.. it less than $2 a month. i think you'd be better off at *least* getting a $5/month host..
JivaGo 04-24-2002, 09:25 PM Cyberwings is good.
They've been having some setup time problems because they're overwelmed. They are having one last sale of 1000 accounts, then they're going all reseller.
Right now it's
$ 2.40 a year-15MB, 6GB bandwidth, 2 MySql, unlimited email, etc.
$ 3.10 - 110mb, 6GB
$12.50 - 150MB, 8GB, 6 mysql
$32.50 - 350MB
And various in between.
They have had excellent reviews for a long time with the exception of long setup times in the last month or two.
I have a regular and a reseller account. If you have a mission-critical need, go spend more money. If you just want to put something up an have it be nearly always available, with pretty good support for only $2.40, go for it. Heck, splurge and do the $3.10.
You'll have to be ready to wait for the setup.

For that amount of money, the host could not even afford to pay for customer support. Unless it's some high school kid on his new DonHost reseller account. :rolleyes:
gnorthey00 04-24-2002, 10:51 PM Those are cheap prices even at monthly, or even weekly rates.
I remembers a site I was using prior to going pay-host called redrival.com it's canadian based, and I had some bad experiences with it, however I do believe that they were fairly decent, and many people I know said it was good (at the time)
Let's talk dollars and sense here: (no offense to poster of this price list, as he understands the risk)
The price schedule:
$ 2.40 a year-15MB, 6GB bandwidth, 2 MySql, unlimited email, etc.
$ 3.10 - 110mb, 6GB
$12.50 - 150MB, 8GB, 6 mysql
$32.50 - 350MB
Let's say 80% of their customers buy the cheapest account and 20% buy the most expensive (people buy in the middle somewhere, but it all averages out)
We will assume they have 10,000 accounts, and of each section (the 80% and the 20) 80% of those users use 20% of their resources while 20% use 80% of their resources.
Resource use:
10000 customers X 80% X 20% X 25 MB = 40,000 MB
10000 customers X 20% X 80% X 25 MB = 40,000 MB
10000 customers X 80% X 20% X 350 MB = 560,000 MB
10000 customers X 20% X 80% X 350 MB = 560,000 MB
Total MB = 1.200,000 MB
I won't even go into bandwidth, but disk alone is a lot of space using this 80-20 theory I've heard.
If you get 40 Gig's a server (free after installing everthing else) you're gonna need 30 dedicated servers.
Let's say you get cheap didcated servers, say $150 a month per unit, you'll pay out $4800
Income:
10000 X 80% X $2.40 = $ 19,200
10000 X 20% X $32.50 = $260,000Total = $279,200
Monthly = $ 23,266
Net Monthly = $ 18,666
Sounds great huh???
I'm pretty sure you haven't calculated bandwidth, but disregarding, you're gonna need a lot of staff to handle the support calls if you stuff each server full of 30 Gigs of data, and boy are those pipes gonna fill up (especailly if they're all Compaq Presarrios running on two DSL lines from your garage)
Server CPU usage is gonna suck and hard disk space using the 80-20 theory is a ganble at best.
Pretty soon you're tired, you're stressed, you have $18K, burt not for long cause you get sued for fraud and then you're poor as heck. (I believe that demise follows one host *chough* TAcid *chough* which I watched die on this very forum, I don't know about the lawsuit)
JivaGo 04-24-2002, 11:36 PM Well, it doesn't really make sense when you look at the numbers.
But for $2.40 for a whole year, and they've been doing it for a while, it's not a big gamble. Esp. if all you're doing is www.MyStupidHobby.com, or www.MyStupidVacationPictures.com, the world's not going to stop spinning if it goes down every once in a while. Or even if they go belly up after 6 months. It's only $2.40.
I paid $22 a year a year ago for another host that was way rinky-dinkier. No forum, no FAQS, no chat, no phone number, no CGI-BIN, no nothing. The doom sayers said it was too cheap. They lasted the year.
Cyberwings has a whole community that helps to deal with issues even if the staff doesn't get to you right away.

debris 04-25-2002, 01:53 AM Okay, since you asked for cheap hosting... http://2mhost.com They've been around for awhile, but it's run by a guy whose English leaves quite a bit to be desired, so customer service is obviously not their strongest point. That's all I know. Good luck in finding a host.
Abu Mami 04-25-2002, 06:54 AM I would highly recommend Microworld.com (http://www.microworld.com). Just pay around $30 one-time fee for life-time domain hosting with no ads. I know, sounds TGTBT, but I've had my account now for almost 2 years with hardly any problems. Tech support is prompt, courteous, and competent. The main drawback is that there aren't any "extras" included such as mySQL, PHP, etc. Email forwarding IS included. If you're just looking for a place for your HTML web site, I would highly recommend them.

<Sorry, I know, off topic. So just hit Alt-Ctl-Del :-) >
The Laughing Cow 04-25-2002, 07:41 AM check out dixisys.com I think the URL is. A guy from Dixisys visits this board and seem very reliable. They work on the concept of having lots of users with very cheap plans so they can stay in business AFAIK. They seem to be well recommmended.
ToastyX 04-25-2002, 12:22 PM Cheap is not always better. I've seen $1 per year. If you go with someone THAT cheap, your greed is taking over common sense.

Why?
If you just have a low volume, low profile site, why should you feel guilty for only paying a dollar? I'm not manly enough unless I pay $20 a month?
I have one site that has links to a bunch of public radio stations across the country, with schedules and listen live links. I may develop it to be a full fledged site with all the bells and whistles. Probably I'll never do it. I'll just use it from any computer I happened to be at, to get the stations I'd like to hear.
That's worth $3.00 a year to me. Why the heck not? It doesn't always have to make sense!
Martie 04-25-2002, 01:08 PM cheap or free = not hard to find :o

Uhm, I hope it's ok to mention that the correct spelling is "dixiesys.com" :D hehe

...because chances are, you'll have to look for another host in a month or two because they'll either be down all the time or out of business, so you really end up paying $3.00 for a month or two, not for an entire year. Not only that, most of the $1 per year hosts are run by high school or college kids that have no clue what they're doing, so if you have a problem, chances are it's not going to get fixed. If you're willing to go through all of that trouble, then you got what you paid for, but I think it's worth paying more for better peace of mind. I never said you should feel guilty or pay $20 per month, but asking if there's anyone less than $20 per YEAR is usually asking for trouble.
pearhost 04-25-2002, 08:05 PM Cheap is not always 'BAD'
My suggestion do not go with a company who has only cheap plans! there are lot of chances that they can close the shop because of the less profitability!
But you will find companies who has various plans carefully priced for all type of prospects. There is no harm going with them even for 20$ a year!

I agree, cheap does not necesarily mean bad news, for your site, it probably does, but then, if you're not too concerned abyout your site (loike previous poster stated, if it's just sillypictures.com or something along that line) you really shouldn't be too concerned if your site is offline for a couple days as long as your overal stability is 'okay'.
My post is more a caveat for those looking for a stable environment. Personally, I have 3000 better things to do than deal with hosting. I'd rather pay $10-ish a month and be done with it. I want my site to be up, but I don't care if it goes down for short periods.
If you're not too worried about your site, go with one of the suggestions above. There are always caveats to hosting, but there are a lot more with cheap hosts:
- Some have been involved in shady business dealings
- Some under price, and therefore are gone within the year
- Reliability and stability may be less than what you want
debris 04-25-2002, 11:56 PM I've witnessed that a $20/month host does not necessarily mean better-than-average service either. And that REALLY is frustrating, should you be unlucky enough to have gone with a host like such.

Yes, that's useful to get rid of unwanted things in your life, same goes for Ctrl-W. :D
Abu Mami 04-26-2002, 02:24 AM I must disagree with the stream of negative comments about cheap or free hosting. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I've been very happy with Microworld. It really all depends on the company and on their intentions. I've found a good cheap host that suits my needs. Maybe there are others out there that are also good, maybe not.
Blikje 05-23-2002, 06:12 AM Well, these few-bucks-hosts are actually a good idea, gut you shouldn't use them for your php driven 50 MB size page.
For excample (like someone posted): I have a collection of links which I want to access from home, work school etc. I can't carry a list of these domains all the time with me so I take a $2 dollar host at which I get 2mb space, 50 MB of data traffic for a whole year. FTP would be nice too. Nothing else. I register a name at GoDaddy costing me $8.95 , or I even take a NameZero (or however they call it) domain for free. So for $10.95 dollar max I get my site which I can access everywhere. Can the hosting company make profit? Let's say he only gives minimal support, so he can handle it himself. He takes a RackShack server of $99 per month with a 60 GB hard disk (this weeks special) and 400 GB bandwidht.
So the costs are $1188 per year. To break even he needs 594 customers. This customers needs 1188 MB of space and 29700 MB of traffic (max) per year. He has 30300 MB of data traffic left which can get him 606 customers. This makes him a profit of $1212 dollar per year. And he has 57600 MB disk space left, so he can even gives his customers a total of 50 MB space and still making a profit. Of course, every raise of $1 dollar per year per customer raises his profit by $1200 dollar. He only has an average cost of $0.99 dollar per year.
Heck, even I would start this kind of hosting. The only problem will be to find customers.
He can add as many servers as he like, as long as there are customers.
So it is possible to run such cheap hosting for private use, and there will be lots of people who want this IMO.

finnley001 05-23-2002, 06:43 AM You could try Hypermart (http://www.hypermart.net) they have a number of free plans, but also some paid ones.
The free ones are a nightmare because of all the ads, but the paid ones are actually quite good.
Later
