Domain Name Lock

What are your thoughts about this feature? Do you use it? Are you considering using it?

According to Stargate.com, this "security service allows all domain registrants to create a “tamper proof seal” on their domain names to eliminate theft and hijackings." They are charging $3.95/year for this feature. GoDaddy does not have it (I couldn't find it). NameCheap offers it for free.

Are you concerned? Share your thoughts!

OpenSRS offer it for free.
I'm using it to protect all my domains from domain hijacking.

i use that feature on all of my domain names with enom as well, but i dont think i would pay 3.95 for it. Your domain name should be safe from hijacking without this feature.

You wouldn't pay 3.95 for it, but you would pay 29.95 for your domain name with eNom (I am making an assumption you paid full price)???

If I purchase a domain name with Stargate.com and select DomainLock I only pay 17.90. Even less with their DomainXpress service.

In a perfect world your right. We shouldn't need car alarms, bolts on our door, cameras in day care centers, etc. Better safe than sorry.

Wrong assumption, I am an enom reseller myself, and I pay less than the 17.90 at stargate, and the enom system works very well, i dont have the problems that I had with the couple of domains i registered at stargate.

Not to sound lost, but well, I am... What exactly is "Domain Lock"? I've never heard of it nor domain hijacking. Just curious...

Domain hijacking consists of a domain being transferred to a new registrar without the approval or authority of the domain registrant. Generally, ownership is changed in the process and the original owner loses the domain name. You must then rely on the losing and gaining registars to cooperate in order to retreive the lost domain name. I've seen this process take months.

Locking a domain name at the registry level does not allow the domain name to be transferred while under a lock status.

Registry Lock actually locks all the data that the Registry maintains on your domain from being changed.

The means nameservers as well.

And as for OpenSRS charging or not, that will depend entirely on the Reseller you use. Some may charge you, others may not. OpenSRS does not set policy for it's resellers.

Anyone know if Dotster offers "Domain Lock" service? I will pose the question to them as well but wanted to see if someone already knew.

Thanks for the info everyone...

Hmm, does this mean that if we have it locked, we need to unlock it first before we can change the nameservers?

I'd also like to know what OpenSRS reseller and enom reseller you ALL wouldd recommend aside from NameCheap? I'm looking for a reseller that offers features like NameCheap AND has the Account area on a secure server (as well as the sign-up).

Oh.. and what's the difference between the services from OpenSRS and enom, btw? :)

Thanks ....

enom resellers usually bundle their product with a number of extra free features like url forwarding, email forwarding etc, and you can usually find enom resellers selling domains cheaper than opensrs.

Where can I find a list of enom resellers as well as opensrs resellers? I couldn't find such a list on enom.com. And Tucows says list is coming soon.

Thanks,

Jessica

OpenSRS resellers are listed by TLD on the OpenSRS website.

Domain hijacking - well I guess now there is one more thing in the world to be paranoid about...
