I just want to thank you guys in advance of the great tips I know I'm going to pick up here. Have lurked a wee bit but haven't posted anything.
I have a client whom I am making a website for. This site will be for Youth Football Schemes, which will be accessed through schools.
The client would like to have a members area where the school pays £25 a year mewmbership where the kids can then go in and download his media packs.
Html, Fireworks and Flash are no problem, the only thing I don't know is what to
do about setting up this members area as it is something I have never done before, so I am starting at ground zero on this subject.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Andy
Hi Andy. Welcome to WHT.
You can set up a login page to allow paid members to access the private area. But there is a much easier way. You can just password protect a directory. Most of the mainstream control panels allow you to easily protect directories with a login and password. Which control panel are you using to manage your site?

The guy in question had already set up his own webspace through 123-reg.co.uk
I have requested that he send me the details to go into his control panel and poke about.
Password protecting a directory does seem to be an easy option.
I am going to have a search and see what I can find out about this but of
course if anyone can point me in the right direction, that would be greatly appreciated. I am going to have a practise bash in my own webspace.
Thanks :agree:

If the control panel doesn't address password protection, then you can also just do it manually with htaccess.

You might also consider a content management system such as e107, it can be completely custom skinned, dosent require you to keep the copyright info displayed and has a vast variety of plugins. It has forums, a messaging system, upload and download areas and a lot more.

have a look at www.amember.com - top notch membership management script, supports many payment gatways as well. You can allow member only access to any folder on your site.

There's Access Magic Lite (http://reamdaysoft.com/access-magic-lite/overview.html). It's very secure, but amember is also really good. For what you need, that's probably the best one.

I forgot to mention, e107 is also very secure, is membership and user class based, with control of who sees what throughout the entire site and its free :)

It may sound a little dodgy although there are some on ebay, for example http://cgi.ebay.com/Membership-Site-Mananger-PHP-Script-Easy-Setup-RESELL_W0QQitemZ9515836369QQcategoryZ47103QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem which accepts paypal subscriptions, etc.
Hope that Helps
