Hi everyone... I have a friend who is writing up a paper about Carnivore (http://www.fbi.gov/hq/lab/carnivore/carnivore2.htm) and she asked if I could answer some questions for her. Since I don't run my own data center I wasn't much help, so I thought I might ask those who do have their own data center her questions. If you do not want to reply in public, please feel free to e-mail me your answers to admin@hostmagik.net
thanks! :D

8. Do you think it violates privacy?
9. Do you think that the system allows surveillance of clients other than the intended?
10. Have you ever had Carnivore installed on one of your machines?

If your answer to 10 was no, skip to question 15

12. Did the document obligating you to allow the installation specify details as to why the installation was necessary? If yes, what were they?

14. Upon installation of the device were you told a specific length of time that the device would be attached? If yes, how long? Was it removed at the time specified?

I also have a good 2600 article on Carnivore, but it doesn't seem to be on the web, you might look for the Summer 2001 issue, pages 6 and 7...

Thank you very much, I will pass this information on to her. :)

I've e-mail about 10 hosts with these questions and recieved zip in response. :bawling: Hopefully the e-mails I sent out just now will get a response, at least a "sorry we can't answer this for you". I was thinking that maybe these questions might be too intrusive, I sure hope I can get a little more feedback. Her paper is due in 2 weeks.

*crossing my fingers...

Privacy never should be invaded. It is sometimes absolutely necessary. But, that's for another thread, I suppose.

For those people reading this thread that have no idea what it's about (like me), this link is pretty interesting:
