View Full Version : The reality of removing ensim...

I have a server with rackshack, that came with ensim. I absolutely HATE ensim, me and my buddy share the server. And we both decided we would rather have no control panel at all, versus having ensim.

How hard would it be to uninstall ENSIM? I know its time consuming, just by looking at all the programs...

And also, what is another good... affordable control panel, we would need a 100(or more) domain license. And it would have to be easy to use for (friends, family setup with free accounts). As friends/family dont know much about anything computer related. I like how easy control panel(cpanel) is, its very attractive as well... Something along those lines......

Any help appreciated!

Umm..How about CPanel? Seriously, all of our resellers and end users love it. We had a nightmare of a time with Sphera and I'm hearing similar things with Ensim. It sounds like all of these systems with weird, proprietary "hosting technology" end up causing users more trouble than it's worth.

Thanks MiHa, i will certainly send you an email ASAP. And i appreciate you taking the time to help a novice such as myself...

Rbro, i totally agree with you on the cpanel issue. My only problem is costs, this server is setup for leisure, helping people, giving free hosting to friends/family. The downside would be paying a high license fee, when i wont be making any return money. And as is im already dishing out $130 monthly for the server. The solution would have to be either one time setup fee. And or something very very resonable monthly. I dont want to sound like a cheap skate, but $130 a month for my pleasure of having a dedicated server is enough lol...

Let me know what you guys can come up with

If you can, switch over to plesk cancel the server and sign up another rackshack deal with PLEESK :)

Its wicked.

Miha,,, just sent you an PM on the board, if you could respond send to sites@freeplace.net

We origionaly had plesk on a server we ordered from tranxactglobal.com, but we cancelled the server.

We signed up with rackshack for their, 600GB, P4, 1GB memory, plan for the same price. And it only came with ensim...

What other solutions are their (including plesk, cpanel)...

How is the installation(difficult?)
And how much will it cost?

We've been using Plesk and our customers love it as well. Very tidy and professional looking control panel. Very stable, very secure, and the plesk supports are wonderful people to work with.

The installation is a breeze. You can either use RPM or Standard installation for RedHat and FreeBSD (I also heard someone installed it on Mandrake and Slackware without any problem). Plesk also has its own forum too where you can find a lot of hints and tips, feedback, installation, etc.

The price ranges from $199.00 (30 domains) to about $800 (unlimited domains).

About control panels and costs..
The most popular control panel I think is Cpanel and it's not so hard to install. The cost of Cpanel is around $80-90/month (depends on where your server located).
The other popular is Plesk (I thibk plesk is older than Cpanel). I don't have any idea how much is the Plesk..

There a lot of free control panels.. the one I know is called ISPMAN http://ispman.org/ - and it is very nice!

Awesome thanks alot miha!

Plesk sounds great, but its a little pricey for someone using a control panel for free purposes. Any other more affordable solutions?

Ensim developers must be very angry at us (clocker1996, vigor, Miha) because they want money for license but I don't want to get Ensim even for free ;)

IMHO they did Ensim in a wrong way.. :D

CPanel is the way to go. If you get a server with a CPanel reseller, the lisence won't cost too much.

I have to agree. We had similar problems with Sphera. I think all of these proprietary "hosting platforms" are riddled with problems. Cpanel has been a breeze for us and our customers....

I attached you file (rpm components.zip) - unzip it ( there is .xls
file which require for MS EXCEL, but if don't have one I can send you
it as a text file). In this file you can find the list of all software
installed by Ensim. Search for words containing "webppliance"
and "ensim" so you'll find ensim components.. then remove them using RPM
(use --nodeps option to remove without any checking) and install all
software you needed (apache, proftpd.. etc) BUT! BE CAREFUL! SSHD AND
TELNETD ARE ALSO FROM ESNIM so you after remove telnetd package from
ensim you should install default telnetd (use SSHd when you'll
install/uninstall telnetd), make sure that default telnet you just
installed is working fine, then connect via telnet to your server and login as a
root (use "su") and uninstall SSHd from ensim package and install default sshd
(make sure it is working), so now you have access to your server via
SSHd so you can install anything ;), and that's it! After you've done all this
you can install default daemons and software. But remember to be
careful with uninstalling SSHD and TELNETD.. I had server at RS with
ensim and I uninstalled it but now I don't keep servers at RS - they..
I saw there are some other ways to uninstall - using 2 HDDs but I
don't know how to do this and it require for second HDD.. If you have
any questions - let me know.

Good luck!
