Otherwise good free ones,

phpBB2

I would say burning board, but the recent release isn't free anymore.

I personally love VBulletin now (i was against purchasing it before) but phpBB would be my favorite if I didn't want to pay...

I do know that there are hosts that will offer you a discount if you purchase/use VB and host with them....

Vb all the way. It was worh the cost. I had several other boards before vB and they just can't compare.

And when vB 3 comes out lol well I can't wait:D

Good luck in your choice

if you want free, PHPBB2 is far and away the best you can get :)
IMO, it gives VB a serious run for its money

If you want a free board I would recommend phpbb2.. I used phpbb before and it worked great.

I'd say try out phpBB2 before going ahead and getting vBulletin... its not like phpBB2 is hard to install or anything ;)

if you didn't like it after trying it out... then definately, vBulletin ;)

My personal favorite is Ultimate Bulletin Board. I've been using the software since it first was released.

If you purchase the full license of vbulletin, is that it no more payments.

How about when the new version comes out???

Cheers,

If you buy it, you get to run the software for ever, but you only get one year of updates... After that its like 35 bucks a year for updates.....

If you lease you can only run it for one year, and at the time, your lease is up, and you must either release it, or remove the software from your site...

So what are the advantages of vbulletin to all those other free boards out there.

Is phpBB2 the closest match?

hey guys, i stumbled on this new forum, (its not yet realeased yet) but it looks damn better than phpbb2 (the problem with phpbb2 is their header, i don't know if u can change the rectangle header on the top left)

Closest match to vBulletin that is free is probably Burning Board.

A paid company tends to stay around more, look what happend to Ikonboard....

And also, you tend to get better support for the product because they can afford to pay for a support staff... And also pay for better programmers....

I don't think anything is....

vB is the best product, so far, in 6 months there might be something better... But I doubt it, maybe in a year we'll see big competitor with vB....

heh
of course you can change the header image in PHPBB2 :P
and i would suggest installing PHPBB2 before buying VB, just to test it out
no point in paying for VB if you are hjappy with a free alternative

was that meant for me? yes i know u can change that header image of phpbb2, but i was wondering and referring that instead of the 300x150 pixel(estimated size) header with something else with different dimensions.
