View Full Version : Is this domain expired?
cdnav8r 04-23-2002, 01:53 PM I did a whois search on the domain that i want, and here is what i come up with. I will use asterisk to remove personal info and the domain name. I see that the status is SUSPD and the renewal date was 2002/04/22, but I can't seem to register it. Is it not expired? The owner was trying to sell it for a minimum of $500, but I don't have that kind of money. I just want it for a personal site, as its my last name. Any info you can provide about its status and if its indeed expired would be appreciated.

I believe so, yes. Unless that means the date he renewed the domain - never seen that before
cdnav8r 04-23-2002, 02:14 PM the problem is....I can't register the domain. Does it have anything to do with it being "suspended"?
You can't really register domains until the registrar releases them... it might be tomorrow, a few months, or 10 years. Depends if the registrar wants the domain to be released.
cdnav8r 04-23-2002, 02:35 PM Ok, maybe I'll contact the registrar directly.
Thanks for the help. :)
EluZioN 04-23-2002, 04:32 PM Domains sometimes never expire. I have a few domain names I know of which have the expiry date back in 1998 on them. 404 errors when you go to the sites, but the registrar for whatever reason didn't release them. Never was too sure why that happens.
TheMMIz 04-23-2002, 05:04 PM I believe that means that the domain is suspended. People have had this problem before. If someone does a chargeback, has a check bounce, or something else along those lines, then the registrar puts a hold on the account.
Try contacting the registrar at support@baremetal.com or 250-598-7708 as listed on http://baremetal.com/support.html, they might be able to help you out a bit more. Good luck!
cdnav8r 04-24-2002, 02:31 AM I contacted them and they said that the domain is held for 30days after expiring in case the person wants to renew it....but after 30days, they will release it.
whtpost 04-24-2002, 04:27 AM Some advice if I may. If the domain is really important to you, consider using one of the services that specialize in registering expired domain names. You may find otherwise that once it has been released, the name has been registered by someone else before you had a chance to buy it.
cdnav8r 04-24-2002, 11:25 AM what services would you be talking about?
ToastyX 04-24-2002, 11:52 AM I've seen domains that have expired many months before that still work, usually registered at Network Solutions.
whtpost 04-24-2002, 12:16 PM Snapnames and namewinner are two services that come to mind that may help you catch the domain name before someone else does.
Namewinner is an auction type of service, snapnames charges $69.00
Good luck.
whtpost 04-24-2002, 12:21 PM An expired domain name will still resolve until it is put on hold. The time it takes for an expired domain to be put on hold varies, I believe, with the registrar where the name has been purchased.

thanks....
but I don't think i'll pay for the service....if i miss out, its my lost. The previous owner actually stated minimum of $500 to sell this name and no one bought it....its just a last name anyways
