View Full Version : Views about other religions (tangential to: Do you believe there is a God?)
<<EDIT: after some consideration, I realised the original question is not totally relevant to Rew's original question, so I've split it off into a new thread and continued it here.>>
In light of the other thread started by Rew, let me throw a tangent slightly and ask: how do Christians (in general or your own view, I don't mind either way) view or feel about other religions with different 'figureheads'/concepts (i.e. Hinduism, Wiccan, even different arms of Christianity e.g. Church of England vs. Uniting Church vs. Pentecostal)? Do you attempt to re-concile others' religions beliefs to yours; do you reject them outright; or do you adopt an accepting attitude? Well, ok, 'accepting' isn't the correct term, but you get my gist.
Actually, this question doesn't just apply for *any* denomination, but all people.
I will reveal my religious orientation + views in due course ;)

I have never seen any religion that accepts another view as a possibility (possible exception of Wiccans). From what I've experienced, religious people tend to be closed-minded and judgemental.
I believe in God and think 'he' is a wonderful 'thing'. On the other hand, I think religions are dangerous and scary.

Abu Mami 04-23-2002, 09:41 AM Well, of course my religion offers unlimited bandwidth.

If you read the bible you will see that one of the biggest sins is judging other people. Myself I am Christian and my wife is Catholic I fully believe in the bible and everything else that is in christianity. I do not believe in Budda, Wiccanism or any other form or "god" myself but I do not pass judgement on people who do. Now my wife on the other hand who is Catholic highly disapprove's of any other religions or "gods" and consider's them evil and unacceptible which I feel makes her judgemental. Everyone is free to believe in what they want to believe in and I dont think that people should be looked down apon just because they do not believe in what we believe in. I also do not believe that if you are athiest, wiccan or worship any other types of "gods" that you will be sent to hell. I believe that if you live you life the way you should and treat people half decent you will end up ok in the long run. It all basically comes down to the battle of good and evil. It is up to you to decide which way you want to go and if you are going to wrong way to decide if you want to turn things around. I personally myself can say when I was a bit younger was heading down a bad road and one day I realized what I was doing to myself and my future and decided to turn it around and with the help of god and my christianity was able to do so.
God Bless.
So, er, back to the original question....
I have no problems with people believing whatever they want to believe. If you don't believe in the same thing as me, that's okay. We can still be friends.
But, I do not reconcile my faith with other faiths. I'm happy to accept you (the generic "you" here, not anyone in particular) regardless of your beliefs. I expect you, then, to allow me to have my beliefs.

If you read the bible you will see that one of the biggest sins is judging other people. Seems we're in complete agreement. At least in the judgement department. I'm Jewish, and religious, or what's commonly called orthodox. I too feel that it's not for me to judge someone else, that job belongs solely to Him. As for what I think about everyone else, who cares? I take care of my family and myself, and beyond that, what everyone else does is their business. I have non-religious Jewish friends and family, and non-Jewish friends and family, and as far as I'm concerned, there is no difference.
If only everyone adhered to this principle. But then again, that might be judgemental. :-)

Try:
Unitarian Universalist (http://www.religioustolerance.org/u-u.htm) :D
Personally, I don't see the need to tie in "love your nebour" with "Jesus who beat death", so generally just get in that loving feeling
Too much "fluff" to be attractive for me.
