He who hesitates...has lost the beer. :)
Seriously, Mike, one must not fear to point out something which is in direct contravention of the established protocol, lest the integrity of this fine board be lost on us all.
poohbie 01-11-2001, 01:01 PM Hmm, advertisement or not, I'm kinda interested. I have a couple domains that I can get hooked up to hosting with that kind of price. Anyone hear anything good or bad about them, except for the fact that they might be spamming this forum? :)
CRego3D 01-11-2001, 01:14 PM well, try them out :) .. you can only loose 10 bucks :D
gregor 01-11-2001, 06:37 PM Sorry I didn't mean to spam I should have read the guidelines better. :)
Uhm, was the original post edited? If so, then it would have been moved to the ad forum, but since then the post now reads 'Has anyone used them'? Hmmm.....
Anyway : discount-hosting.com seems to be based at DigitalNation....
BC,
gregor made his post to look as if he was a third party asking for information to the host in question... Rather, he is the host.
Bah, I must have too much time on my hands to be worrying about this..
Thank you Mike.

HyperBaseball 01-11-2001, 10:15 PM Does anyone know if these guys offer SSI or ASP? I realize that's kind of picky for $10 a year, but the personal home page I want on there would just be nicer with that.
And since they don't really have 'support' maybe someone here would know. Thanks.
gregor 01-11-2001, 10:22 PM I think I'll sign up for there free month it can't hurt.
I'll tell you how the service is and what features it offers after I get my account.
it's really anoying when a company doesn't list all it's features and just say it has these plus heaps more :(
etLux 01-12-2001, 02:30 AM I would perhaps be willing to offer one sheep's bladder of fermented goat milk in exchange for a year of web hosting.
Would this be acceptable?
GordonH 01-12-2001, 05:34 AM Hello
This is very interesting.
I have mentioned before that I have been looking at the viability of offering a small plan.
I looked at my server costs:
$450 per month per machine
Annual cost= $5400
Then divided that by 400 small sites per machine.
This came in at $13.50 per site per year.
On top of that are the costs of any bandwidth overage and support (the biggest costs of all).
I would like to know how they are managing to make a profit at $10 per year?
Gordon
etLux 01-12-2001, 10:43 AM Plainly, they attract many, such as me, who pay with valuable bladders of fermented goat milk; and then resell this sought-after beverage at a high price to cover their server costs.
Clearly, there can be no other explanation.
I'm currently paying $3 a month with digitalspace.net for hosting. I been with them about 9 months now and yeah okay it's not as fast as it could be and the downtime pisses me off a bit sometimes but for the $3 god knows how they make a profit.
GordonH 01-13-2001, 01:47 PM They can definitely make a profit at $36 but the support must suffer.
The only way I can offer a $36 plan is by only giving a CGI-BIN and one POP3 account (no control panel).
I have had that plan on my web site for a couple of days and have been underwhelmed by the response.
Lots of sales (2 or three a day), but not of that plan.
I think people are really looking for something for nothing and now that Northsky are planning to offer cgi and domain hosting with no banners for 50c per month anything could happen to the market.
Gordon
projo 01-13-2001, 04:08 PM Hi Gordon
Are you referring to northsky.com? If so they have a redirect and a name change to
http://www.communityarchitect.com/
The site states that they are now a part of About, Inc.
Gary
GordonH 01-13-2001, 06:06 PM Yes
Thats right, I just couldn't remember the new name.
A friend has a community there and has been offered a bannerless option at 50c per month per account, with domain hosting on the way.
Obviously ads are not worth much these days.
Gordon
Chicken 01-13-2001, 09:12 PM Apparently not. I'd hope they'd be worth more than 50c a month? Goodness. I'm guessing it will come with unlimited bandwidth :)
