View Full Version : I've caught up with the times...
Tim Greer 04-23-2002, 12:57 AM I was on a 26.4 modem connection due to poor phone lines every since I moved into a new home over a year ago. No DSL, Cable or anything was in this area. I finally got cable. This is *nice*. I was connected at 26.4, and now my slowest speed tests show me this:
2002-04-23 00:45:12 EST: 1477 / 354
Your download speed : 1477268 bps, or 1477 kbps.
A 180.3 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 354945 bps, or 354 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!
I have this speed gauranteed, because the local cable company has "lots to spare". Not bad for $50 a month. I'm in geek heaven! It's about time, I was going to have to move if this wasn't in this area soon!
nelix 04-23-2002, 01:01 AM lucky you...im still stuck with dialup:(
and cable isnt available to my area (even my state) and ADSL costs to much for the amount of bandwidth i use:( :bawling: :bawling: :(
Tim Greer 04-23-2002, 01:12 AM I was in that same boat for 4 years. By the time I could get DSL (Up here in the sticks, it seems!), I was moving. That was over a year ago. I thought it wouldn't make too much of a difference, since I don't download a lot of large files. But, even without that, it makes updating things a lot faster and easier. Plus, I can update all the software for my home network in a snap. I was on a waiting list for over a year to be called as soon as they offered anything in this area. It'll happen eventually for you too, I hope. Otherwise, move, move as soon as you can! :-)
nelix 04-23-2002, 01:17 AM The problem is that i live in Tasmania, Australia - which is years behind the rest of Aus. and the fact that only about 3 providers offer ADSL in Tas and they know they dont have any competition so crank up the prices.
Dialup is fine, i guess:( i still manage to download bout 5Gb a month. everything just takes longer:bawling:
dragonhawk 04-23-2002, 01:24 AM I'm in Victoria, Australia and I too am on a dialup. Wish i was on a cable connection though since I am on the internet quite a fair bit. Optus is not available in my area either and Tesltra is just way too expensive. ADSL is out of the question...
I'm only allowed 350 mb per month, don't know how you can average 5gb a month on a dialup... you must be on 24 hours a day!!
nelix 04-23-2002, 01:42 AM you must be on 24 hours a day!!
yeah i normally am (well my computer is) i have it set up so that it automatically connects to the net opens my download programs etc. and away i goes.
I even have remote access to it over the net so that if i think it has crashed or if someone calls my mobile while im out and wants to use the phone - if im at a computer with net access i can shut down, restart etc my computer
Its a really sweeet setup i think;)
Tim Greer 04-23-2002, 01:47 AM Would either of you happen to know the connections in Carins? I might need to know in the next few years.
dragonhawk 04-23-2002, 01:49 AM You know, because I've got a dialup, it would be good if i got unlimited downloads too... hate the fact that i'm only allowed 350mb a month!! That's just not enough :bawling:
Imagine running a web hosting co on a dial up... that'd be funny :D

Nope, got no idea... Cairns is a little way up north... Someone once told me that people get dumber the futher up north you go. Don't know how true that is, since I've never been that far before.

Would that be Cairns in Australia? Boy, does it get hot up there. The humidity is a killer. :)
I come from Queensland, Australia. "Beautiful one day, perfect the next". :D
dragonhawk 04-23-2002, 02:00 AM heh, that sounds familiar, what about melbourne with "4 seasons in 1 day" - not much of a tourist incentive though...

I am with iPrimus and highly recommend them. I pay $75 per 3 months for unlimited hours and downloads :D have never had a problem with them, always connects first time (at least in hobart)
Tim Greer 04-23-2002, 03:15 AM Yes, I speak of beautiful, burning hot, horribly humid Cairns, Australia. :-)
dragonhawk 04-23-2002, 03:23 AM I don't know anybody who ever speaks of going to cairns... it's usually sydney or some place in queensland... I'd really like to visit hobart though...

That sounds like a good deal. Might give them a shot... How long before they disconnect you? We have a 4 hour limit before they cut you off.

By then, Netspace should have their current problems resolved. :-)

I believe they are up in Cairns, and people are generally pretty happy with it. AU$100 for 10GB (3GB peak and 7GB off peak).
It might interest you too Bob. There are some favourable reviews from out west there.
(Dragonhawk...Cairns is in Queenlsand :-)
Cheers
