View Full Version : Slow speed to DV2!

Hello,

We have a server at the DV2 network like a lot of people here and their network speed is really amazing when it's working, but at times (2-3hs per day lately) it gets really slow. I mean so slow that we can't even get our email (it timeouts). I've contacted eServers.biz numours times about this problem and they have done what they can, but the problem is not on their network, it's on the route to it. From what I can gather from the traceroutes I think it's AGIS (possibly Telia), what do you think and what can be done about this?

Below are the traceroutes, first from us to our server, then from our server back to us.

[the rest has been removed since it's pingtimeout]

========================

If you look at the first traceroute, you will see that at #11 (205.198.19.113) the ping jumps up really high and even ping timeout's a couple of times.

If you look at the second traceroute, you will see that almost the same thing happens at #5 (205.198.19.114).

So the problem starts at:
205.198.19.113 and 205.198.19.114
:smash:

All thoughts and suggestions are highly appriciated.

Thank you in advance for your time and help.

I forgot to post the ping results, this is from the MS-DOS prompt so don't bother the average since it counts ping timeouts as 0ms.

Ping statistics for 209.51.139.238:
Packets: Sent = 1000, Received = 621, Lost = 379 (37% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 521ms, Maximum = 762ms, Average = 362ms

I normally use http://webservices.cnet.com/ping and get
a resonable result.... although ping from dos prompt
is over 1000ms!!!!

JWong, where are you located that you get 1000ms+ ping? Also can you do a traceroute to them and post it here?

This is really bad, I don't know if it's just people in Sweden that are affected or more countries (ISP's) are too. It used to be slow maybe 20-30 mintues per day, but now it's more than a few hours every day!!

I believe it's because they use Cogent and it's the Cogent problem.

Its got nothing to do with Cogent, we use BGP4 which finds the shortest route to you.

We, have raised many issues with Aleron, but they advise thats its an issue with the data pipe to that router from Telia, that is causing the problem, they are looking to upgrade the pipe, but when they do that they cant say.

Kind Regards

You have told us that before. What I don't understand is if Telia is to blame for this (which I hope they are since it limits the damage to Sweden), why is it that when I do a traceroute from the server back to us, the ping jumps up so high at Aleron and not at Telia? Shouldn't the ping increse at #6 (in the traceroute) instead of #5 ?

I've said it before and I will say it again, the speed to the DV2 datacenter is awesome! The only peoplem is at #11 where the ping used to be on 120-140ms, but at times it jumps up to 400ms+ (it has been on 500+ for the past 24hs)..

Shazad says Aleron says this is caused by Telia, but when I traceroute, as far as I can see, it shows that it's Aleron (AGIS owns the trouble IP). What do you get out from the two traceroutes I've posted in my first post in this thread?

Aleron owns Telia (TII), so of course it is Aleron; I guess what they mean is "We bought this as is, and now we have to fix it".

this is the interface between telia and aleron in nyc - it is oversubscribed right now - they are working on upgrade.

aleron did not buy telia outside the us.

OK,
for the sake of accuracy:
Telia is a European company and its subsidiary, Telia Internet North America (TII) was sold to Aleron.

I think we have this one pretty much covered by now :D

If your having problems with aleron and you bgp route with cogent then you might just prepend the routes so your users can all go over cogent, that way they at least wont have the high ping times on that route.

I thought how can Telia have been bought and I have not heard about it. I guess it explains it since they have not sold anything in Sweden.

Anyways, the speed is back to normal (top notch). Here's a tracereoute of when everything is working (Sweden -> DV2):

Telia seems to be fine most of the time, it only seems to have this problem when its gowing over europe to Sweden and at sometimes of the day, as i have done many tests. They said they are upgrading, that section of it, so figers crossed. :D

Saeed, I've also experienced the network slowdown problem for my server at DV2 and have tried to inform them about it yet I haven't seen any improvement yet. There must be a router problem like cabalstudios said or their bandwidth utilization is too high. Either way, I hope they could fix it soon.
