Why do people want to tranfer their domain when it is neary expiry date?

Some times, people are unhappy with their current registrar. When you transfer, you usually have to pay for another year renewal on your domain, so it is kinda like killing two birds with one stone. I am sure there are other reasons why, but that is a common occurance. Who knows, they may be finding better pricing on renewal.

Actually, for the gTLD domains, a transfer requires that an addional domain year be added to the domain.

The common mistakes people make are:

1) Waiting until 14 days or less from expiration to transfer. Since many transfers fail at least once, this is often too close to complete the transfer before the domain expires.

2) Admin email contact is incorrect. If this is incorrect, it's virtually impossible to transfer your domain without direct Registry support - and this often takes weeks.

Why transfer? Not pleased with prices, or service, or both at their existing Registrar.

A major portion of our business is incoming domain transfers - so they are quite common.

I transferred my domains from Netsol/Verisign to save money. Also, domain name management is much easier now. I can make changes instantly, and they show up in the whois right away.

This is nice. I don't have to wait for the Netsols to get off their rich, collective butts to make the changes for me. I can do it faster, quicker and more accurately on my own. You can't beat that! :)
