Anyone have cleartype switched on in XP? I just ran across it and turned it on. Man! Takes a little getting used to at first, but they weren't kidding when they said 'clear type'

I'm starting to like this OS more and more the longer I have it.

The upgrade to XP was the best thing I've done, PC wise. Haven't rebooted in over a week. Only had it a week btw.

Cleartype is pretty good - why does this stuff take so long to come out :)

Yes, fantastic stuff. But take a screenshot and zoom up close to some text. It uses some bizarre anti-alias technique with colours rather than intermediate shades. Never seen anything like it before.

XP has got some great GUI, and I love every minute I spend on it.

Only 2 problems:
1) I can't seem to install new hardware!!
2) (Bigger problem) I can't get any sound out of it!! (I am running a K7T266 Pro (MS-6380) in my computer)

Sigh... Oh well - you've got to take the goods with the bads... :(

drivers take some digging. XP told me flat out that my WinTV card and Canon scanner wouldn't work. I went to the hauppage and Canon websites and found XP drivers and both are working fine now.

The only thing I had any real issue with was my USB mouse and keyboard, but that proved to be an issue with this p.o.s Packard Bell, not XP.

Ya ClearType is pretty cool.. just figured it out a couple weeks ago myself after running accross it in some hardware review or something.. makes quite the difference. The only thing I don't like about it is the drop shadows underneath icon text on your desktop don't look as good as w/ ClearType turned off.

Also, Avium, I have that exact same motherboard and have no problems with my sound... onboard or otherwise. Are you trying to use the onboard audio? Plug and play worked for it for me.. perhaps try running the Add/Remove Hardware wizard. I also had an old Creative PCI 128 working with no problems.. just had to disable the onboard AC 97 in the BIOS.

Yep, I use an onboard soundcard (the one with the motherboard), but I've done almost everything, and nothing works...

Dang, I can't watch my anime DVDs on my computer. I've had enough of my mum coming over and going "oh gawd, what's that? A guy or a girl? But he looks and sounds so feminine!"

Oh, my computer is completely region-free, so I can watch DVDs from any area ;)

My Computer > Control Panel > Display > Appearance > Effects

then check 'Use the following effect to smooth the edges of screen fonts'

Use the drop down box to select 'clear type' then hit ok.

You'll see the difference right away :)

I just turned on cleartype (running Win XP Pro) and I'm not sure that I like it. Feels like I need to get stronger glasses or something.

Just did the same, and I am the same. Will give it a little while for my eyes to adjust, but at the moment it seems a little blurry, rather than clear.

Love Clear Fonts! I'm so used to clear fonts now that I hate using anything else.

Avium, can't install new hardware-that's a problem. Check out this link. You may find some help here

You can turn it on as explained by akashik, BUT i would try this online config. They show you different screen and you choose the CLEAREST of ALL :)

I must agree that it is pretty cool. However, I was under the impression that it was mainly intended for TFT screens (is this correct?)
I personally don't like it. Initially I had it on for a while, but I just prefer sharp text to antialiased text, I think it is easier to read. This is especially true beacuse the fonts provided by the operating system are so well made.
my question is, do you guys really find it easier to read?

The link DJ posted mentioned that it was mainly intended for LCD screens also. I'm actually using an LCD screen, and yes, I certainly find it nicer to read.

Thanks for the link. That's fine tuned it perfectly. The initial setting I had was a little 'thick' That's made the fonts a little finer.

I'm using a 14 inch screen at 1024x768 so it's made a nice difference. When I get a 17inch I might change back but for now I'm a happy camper.

That link was neat...cleartype looks a lot better now...still needs some getting used to, but I'll give it a try.
