View Full Version : GoDaddy charges to transfer ownership
namvu 04-22-2002, 02:26 AM I am having a big problem with GoDaddy right now because they charge money to transfer ownership of domains ($9.95).
The problem comes in because I need to change my email contact info and can't because for some reason when you register a domain name under a business they do not fill in the first and last name fields. And their form doesn't work when you try to go change the contact info for the Registrant because these two fields are empty.
So I've been bouncing emails back and forth with them and their service has been really poor. Sure they respond quickly, but the quality of their response is really poor....usually some cookie cutter response. I tried calling twice and was put on hold and then disconnected.
So they came back recently and put in a first and last name, but why shouldn't I be able to change these myself...because they want to charge money for it ($9.95). Do other registrar charge for this? I checked NameCheap, OpenSRS, and Stargate and they do not charge for transfer of ownership.
Those of you with GoDaddy...please verify this.
So, I am looking for a new registry. I had NameCheap before, but it looks like a one man operation, and though he seems to be handling it OK, I am a bit weary. If I am wrong someone correct me.
I have over 100 domains to transfer...maybe not all at once, but as they come up for renewal I will...or maybe I'll just transfer them all at once to get it done with. So if someone wants to make me an offer or can recommend a really GOOD registry, let me know.

Mike Feury 04-22-2002, 11:45 AM Those of you with GoDaddy...please verify this. I can confirm this for you - just checked it again to make sure it was still $10 per domain.
I'm in a similar situation to you - want to transfer ownership of 20-30 domains, and also want to be able to register domains for clients and then transfer to them when the whole thing is complete. But I guess I can solve that by putting in their info as Registrant when initially registering.
Btw, there's a lot of red tape attached to the transfer process too - eg snail mailing notarized copies of an agreement etc.
I've been quite satisfied with GoDaddy as a simple reliable cheap Registrar, but they are lacking if you want more than a basic service. Guess I'll be joining you on the Registrar hunt :)
VoxKeysGtr 04-22-2002, 12:02 PM They do charge $9.95 for changes of this type. They recently brought their price down, too. I think they were charging something like $24.95 to do this!
I have recently started using namecheap, and they seem to be pretty good. I transferred some domains over to them from Netsol/Verisign and it went very well. It was quick and hassle-free. I'm a happy camper... :)
thewitt 04-22-2002, 06:38 PM Hmmm, and GoDaddy clearly takes the lead in "who is the best registrar" threads on nearly every forum I frequent.
Imagine that - additional charges on a sub $10 domain registrar. Who'da ever thunk it.

VoxKeysGtr 04-22-2002, 07:04 PM Well, compared to our friends @ Netsol/Verisgn, I do think GoDaddy has a slight edge. ;)
Namecheap, though, totally rocks, so far. I hope it stays that way!
:)
TheMMIz 04-22-2002, 07:28 PM My first reaction was... Its only $10? I think we've become spoiled with all these registration sites. I remember back a couple of years ago when you had to pay $70 for two years, it cost me a bundle to transfer tha name over to someone else. Heck, once I even paid NetworkSolutions $85 a year for both the name and domain forwarding, something you can get for less than $10 at most regisrars.
Not to belittle your concern, but I just thought Id put things into perspective a bit :)
VoxKeysGtr 04-22-2002, 08:20 PM Well, given the chance between being spoiled and not spoiled...
Ohh, OK...go ahead and spoil me...hehehe :D

You have to make money somewhere. At 8.95 your profit margins just aren't there.
I believe GoDaddy is the only top 20 registrar with prices below 10.00. Will they last???
Stargate.com recently raised their prices to 13.95. I love stargate.com. Strange as it sounds, I think I feel even better about using them now, with the price increase, than I did at the 8.85 rate.
Personally only resellers, such as namecheap.com, can sustain a sub 10.00 rate. Their overhead is substantially different than that of a registrar.
Gurudev 04-22-2002, 09:41 PM I hope they don't charge for transfer of domain to another registrar. I will be transferring them to another registrar. I have used godaddy quite a bit, lately - 60+ domains.
I will be transferring them to my other registrar at gandi.net
They have almost everything for $11.50 - email forwarding, domain pointing, etc.,
pgrote 04-22-2002, 10:45 PM Yep, Go Daddy charges. They charge to transfer a domain among Go Daddy users.
The way around this is to have the person selling the domain transfer it to your account at another domain that is free.
namvu 04-23-2002, 04:32 AM Well, my gripe is the inability to change info if I wanted to. They do not charge for transfering out a domain to another registrar, I could always do that.
But what if I just wanted to change the company name? I'd have to pay them over $1000 to do this for all my domains....see my point?

EluZioN 04-23-2002, 07:50 AM I whole heartidly agree! I was with GoDaddy for 9 months and 7 domain names, and I had nothing but problems with virtually all of them. I now have 0 domains with them. I transfered one to NameCheap.com (yep, gave godaddy another $10) and the other 8 I just sold or let expire. Do NOT register with godaddy.com. Not only is their service sloppy, but their professionalism is a FRIGGIN JOKE! Have you seen them arguing with businesses and other places like VeriSign on their front page? They posted a reply to a magazine article and put in on the front page !!! They also spammed all members with an email telling us not to go with VeriSign, claiming VeriSign was going around trying to steal their customers. I don't care if VeriSign is! That's part of business... can you imagine Yahoo! emailing everyone saying "Don't go with hotmail! They are liars and manipulators!". I am glad I will never have to do business with them again. NameCheap on the other hand is wonderful. Although I haven't had to contact support yet (so I don't know what it's like) I can tell you that their layout and interface is wonderful! You can transfer a domain to another member in a quick & free 1 step process, which is great cause when I sell domains I just tell them to signup for an account w/ name cheap, then I send them the domain...
GoDaddy - 0 out of 5
NameCheap - 4 out of 5!!!
On a side note... Just want to say that recentely I moved all my domains from GKG.net, cause I wanted to organize them, and namecheap is cheaper... but overall, GKG is one of the best registrar's out there! Their customer support is unsurpassed. I dare anyone to find a place with better customer support. These guys respond to all emails within 1 hour and they always have GOOD WELL WRITTEN responses, no crappy GoDaddy auto responders. Plus they have a toll free 24 hour line to call. So give them a shot if you want good domains.. namecheap is good too, but if you need support, gkg.net is unbeaten.
GKG.net - 5 out of 5 for the BEST customer support on the internet!
AND GO DADDY SUCKS!!!!

WRONG! Unless they have changed it, they charge $10. Not only did it cost me $10 to transfer, it cost me $20, cause I requested a transfer and GoDaddy denied it! Then I contacted them and they told me I had to buy a "Transfer Ticket" for $9.95. Luckily the place I was transfering to (NameCheap) didnt make me re-pay the $9 cause they are COOL unlike goDaddy.... otherwise it woulda cost me $30. They are a bunch of money stealing punks (godaddy)

Same reaction here. I was kind of crestfallen when I saw how domains have become cheap. I had my first domain at $30 (I thought it was cheap compared to NetSol, but I ended up transferring to NetSol anyway).
I've yet to transfer to and from godaddy.
And I'm having qualms about Namecheap because when I look at their whois I see eNom (and I didn't exactly have a grand time having eNom as my first...hope they improved now though).
namvu 04-24-2002, 12:19 AM $10 isn't a big deal until you multiply it by a 100.
It's the same hidden costs issue that so many companies are doing now especially the banks. They just nickel and dime you to death.
By the way, it looks like GoDaddy just got a facelift and you can now change the Registrant email without it giving you and error.
I can't tell whether or not they still charge for transfers of ownership after looking around for a while, so I'm happy for now.
Acroplex 04-24-2002, 02:19 AM Stargate.com
Enough said. THE best Registrar, most features, paperless free transfers.
JivaGo 04-24-2002, 09:48 PM I don't get it.
Does GoDaddy charge $10 per domain if you transfer to a other registrar?
So if I pay $9, or whatever, to NameCheap to transfer a name out of GoDaddy, I have to pay GoDaddy $10 per domain for them to give them up?
Acroplex 04-24-2002, 09:54 PM No. I meant, transfer of ownership. When you do that, Stargate is paperless, no fee. GoDaddy requires exchange of paperwork and $9.95 from the selling party.
lgibsonusa 04-25-2002, 03:32 PM When picking a registrar - I dont necessarily look only for price but also for ease of use and service levels. BulkRegister is my current registar and i have found them to be great and priced reasonable - particularly if you are managing multiple domains.
I recommend them!

cbaker17 04-25-2002, 04:04 PM We use godaddys reseller service, and from what i gather it does cost 10.00 to transfer a name but that 10.00 also gives you 1 year of registration, so really transferring doesnt cost anything, as 1 year by itself is 9 or 10.00. Maybe thats just for us registrars or something? I know when people renew through us they get a year free of registration along with the transfer.
Ive never had to use godaddys support but from what ive seen they seem fine, havent had any problems, also you no longer have to fax stuff to them to transfer a name.
Hope that helps, Have a great day!
John-Kevin 04-26-2002, 05:12 PM I have transfered many domains from NetSol and Gandi to Godaddy and all works out fine. It takes up to 5 days for the domain to be listed in whois with the new registrar details.
Transfering out of Godaddy to another registrar is free I suppose. Haven't found anything on their site. Where does it mention they charge to transfer to another registrar?

Transferring OUT of GoDaddy to another Registrar means you will pay the winning Registrar whatever fees they charge for domains to be transferred to them.
What I've been talking about all along, is that GoDaddy charges you $9.95 (it was $49.95) to sell your domain to someone else, thus changing OWNERSHIP.
John-Kevin 04-26-2002, 06:14 PM timechange,
you can take advantage of the open market.
if you got domain names hosted at godaddy, ask for a transfer to cheapdomains and change the registerd information for free there.
then move your domain to gandi.net and take advantage of a great service at an approved icann registrar!!!
Acroplex 04-26-2002, 06:16 PM Thanks JK.
I actually host 85% of my domains with Stargate :D
