Does anyone have or know about a Server Monitoring Script which constantly keeps checking the status of a server by pinging it etc. and whenever the server is down it should send a message to an e-mail address?

If you want a linux based solution then try freshmeat.net and do a search for network monitoring. One of my favorite programs is http://www.netsaint.org/screenshot.php.

If you want a windows-based solution then try http://www.webattack.com/freeware/freeware.shtml and click on network monitoring. One of my favorites there is IP Ultra Monitor 2000 because it talks to you. Amazingly it is also a solid program.

Never used it, but doesn't netsaint require you to install the software on a server to monitor another server? I use internetseer and it's worked a charm so far. Server goes down, I get an email message and as soon as the server is back up I get another message telling me and giving me the total downtime, what more would you want for free with no software installation required whatsoever. Again, I'm not saying anything bad about netsaint, just doesn't seem to be the solution if you only have one server running, but I could be wrong...

Hmmm, netsaint does monitor the system resources, that's a big plus compared to internetseer...

I've been using Internetseer for the past month but the free version only polls once every hour (not very helpful). The paid versions poll a lot faster though (I haven't ponied up the cash to use it yet). Things must've changed from when you first signed up. It would be nice if Internetseer polled services too.

Yep, only once an hour, but it better than nothing, considering it's free. I don't feel the need to pay for a continuous watch on my server, so I'm happy enough. At least it gives an indication of the uptime...

If there's anything like internetseer that will keep a continuous watch for free, lemme know, I'll be the first to switch ;)
