From VDI's tech page...

"Effective immediately customers will be charged $25 for any SPAM complaints from our upstream providers. NO Exceptions. "

Is this for the person with the server at VDI or their cutomers too?

If this goes for customers that use hosting companies that have servers at VDI, couldnt it put a place out of business?

This is for the hosting companies that have servers located at VDI. Many colocation providers do this now, and some hosting companies are starting to charge their customers also.

That's true. I was reading the TOS for one host, I don't remember which one now, and it was $5 per email. That whould eat up your lunch money in a hurry. :D:

If you have a server with VDI, then yes you will be charged.

Carlos,

And people wonder why we shut down their account for spamming. It's just not worth it.

I have found that you can usually tell which customers you are going to have trouble with.

1. When you get a new order, check the whois record for the domain and see if it matches the credit card info. A spammer will usually enter garbage for their contact info on the domain because they don't want thousands of angry people calling them at home about the spam, but the credit card info has to be correct. If they are dfferent, ask them about it.

2. Be careful of a customer that just wants an IP addres, and no domain name.

3. Keep a list of people that you have had this problem with before. Many times after you kill their account, they will come back with another domain.

4. Search http://www.deja.com for the domain name and the account holder name. If they are a know spammer there may be posts about it here.

And finally, if you still don't feel comfortable with the account, don't set it up.

Great advice....

Hmmm maybe someone needs to setup a page of known spammers that hosts can check ;p

There are some listed here: http://www.hostcoalition.org/forum/

I'm sure there are other lists around somewhere. If anyone knows of one, please post it here.

UnitedTec: good list. I also recommend having aggressive anti-spam verbage in your TOC/AUP, and always make sure you have some proof that the customer agrees to the TOC/AUP before setting up their account. (If a customer wants to place an order by phone, I always make sure they fax me an "I have read and agree to your TOS/AUP" statement before I put their site online.)

All of VDI managed servers come with a version of exim that checks the RBL. This should elimiate know spammers.

Yep, VDI servers have this line in exim.conf:

rbl_domains = rbl.maps.vix.com:rbl.vdi.net

You could always comment it out if it caused problems though, or add to it by separating the lists by colons.
