Olympic or Olympics

I ended up dumping the 2 I got. Apparently that's a trademark name that's fiercely guarded.

No point messing with them. They are very aggressive and also go after small businesses. Olympic Bag in Canada had to change their name to Ompic.

That's just wrong.

CyberSquatting laws are wrong, too.

I wouldn't go to say they are totally wrong. If there was a rapper named Scaramanga =D and you bought the name even though you have no affiliation with Scaramanga, with all inentions of banking off the money you could sell the domain for, then I think its not totally fair to someone who would put it to good use. But I could also see a lot of gray areas regarding this.

I see the olympics thing as more of a trademark on the name and how its used. I wouldn't see them suing someone who owns a legitemate business, like Olympics Boating Supplies if they bought a domain with that name in it. But maybe they would? Which would be wrong, imo.

That's just wrong.

At most, a person should be ordered to hand over the domain name. But under Clinton's 1999 law, not only will you have to turn over the domain, but you can be FINED $100,000!!! That's corporate terrorism

I agree on that one.

back in 90s you couldn't a .com that has *Olympic* without prior notice to internic/nsi sent from Olympic something federation

same goes for many other international agencies like *NASA* and so on

Up to $100k per name.

On the other hand, it at least tells people what they can't do with their domain names. Trademark
holders invest a lot of time and money building their brands, and are obligated to protect them to
the best of their ability.

Whether you can consider it "corporate terrorism" or not depends on what side of the fence you
choose to sit on. But that's an opinion, of course. ;)

Seriously, dont bother. Olympic has some special worldwide copyright. SEDO wont even allow you to post anything with the word 'Olympic' in it

It's trademark, not copyright. ;)

It's not that the IOC has a worldwide trademark. It just depends where they have
a presence on, and how they'll be able to enforce it.

Most likely Sedo doesn't allow it because they learned from a previous experience.
