View Full Version : Looking for a free forum script
Joshua 11-10-2005, 10:09 PM I need a free forum script (php preferably) that allows me to assign member groups (for private forum access), and allows members to subscribe to a forum (i.e. email them stating that a new post has been made). Invision 1.3 had this capability, but it's no longer available, and the feature does not work on InvisionFree.com . Remotely hosted boards are ok, too.
Thanks,
Josh

Joshua 11-10-2005, 11:22 PM Lauren,
Does PhpBB let users subscribe to a forum without additional mods? I prefer not to use PhpBB on my own account due to their history of hacks and exploits.
Project X 11-11-2005, 06:31 AM ive been hacked but that was only because i didnt upgrade/update.
anything can be hacked, even the pentagon, but i wouldnt let it stop me from using the #1 forum board software!
snapya 11-11-2005, 07:05 AM NEVER EVER USE PHPBB!!!!!<<<<<
I would highly recomend smf over phpbb any day!<<<<<

It's not free anymore. Is the old version available anywhere remotely hosted besides InvisionFree.com?
crazyfish 11-11-2005, 02:07 PM I've used phpbb and smf. I like smf a bit more, it seems to have some better features that I like. Both are free so you can try them out and make sure they have all the features you want/need.

Joshua, simply do a search on the web as I had seen that on the web some time ago.
Joshua 11-11-2005, 06:08 PM I'm currently comparing a few options that I've found, hopefully I'll find one with all of the features working (unlike Invisionfree).
Ariel74 11-11-2005, 06:52 PM phpBB is not bad if you subscribe to their security alert mailing list and keep it updated. Most of the SQL injection and other problems they had are no longer there.
etechsupport2 11-12-2005, 11:49 AM If your budget is higher than free, I would recommend vBulletin and if you still stick with "free" check it with punbb.org, good CSS forum available under GNU public license.
WebzPro 11-13-2005, 05:37 AM Free ------> http://www.simplemachines.org/
Dismounted 11-13-2005, 04:19 PM But people think its ugly lol, i personally think that SMF has a good interface
Kiamori 11-13-2005, 10:31 PM http://communityserver.org offers an amazing community forum/blog/gallery software and they do have a free version available. However, it is not php. Try the beta 2.0 it's very nice.
ThinkSupport 11-16-2005, 12:50 PM SMF is a good option and more secure than phpbb. And yes it allows your users to subscribe to the threads so that they are notified when the thread is updated or replied by other users.
e-view 11-16-2005, 06:20 PM Take a look at http://www.punbb.org/
