My favorites are qmail, vpopmail for POP, qmailadmin for email management, sqwebmail or squirrelmail for webmail, and courier-imap for IMAP.
QMail: www.qmail.org
Everything else: www.inter7.com
Squirrelmail: www.squirrelmail.org

Actually, your users do not have to log into the control panel in order to check their mail if you're using cPanel. They can log in directly to webmail using
http://www.yourdomain.com:2095 or
http://www.yourdomain.com/webmail/

yes theres no need to check the mails from control panels
by default cpanel will get two webmails with cpanel ver4. you can access those @
http://www.yourdomain.com:2095 or
http://www.yourdomain.com/webmail/
or you can create your own alias and use that
