(I am sure there is a psot here like this but I thought to start somethign fresh)

Hey folks...

I am planning with a client to install a shopping cart. This will be my first one on my own and I am looking for opinions and advice on what is out there.

1) We are trying to keep costs down so first we want to look at the scripts in Fantastico.

2) If something outside of Fantastico rings your bell, let me know.

They will sell company related merch such as tee's and mug's and they will also sell tickets to events etc. I will not maintain the cart, the client will. They are not super computer savvy but they can get by - ideally the cart should be easy to maintain/update etc.

As always, any input is greatly appreciated... Thanks!

oscommerce and miva are the two that I have used the most. Honestly, some customers have a really hard time with the admin section of OSC on their own. Miva is really easy to use and maintain. What does your host offer?

They both have demos, maybe let the client take a look to see what he/she likes better.

Hi
I have used oscommerce and zencart and can tell you that zencart is easer to config and a hole lot easer to costomize. It also has alot of the scripts that you will have to install yourself with oscommerce. I do recomend zencart so take a look at it. They have a good site for help.

cubecart should work for that stuff and it is really simple to administer, but Zen Cart is a good choice too.

I would go with osCommerce or Zecart and recommend that you don't install osC with fantastico.

osC is easy to install, and is good you get your hands on a little bit and learn how it works, trust me you will need that soon when you start your store.

I don't recommend cubecart, because it really stinks with SSL. We've had no end to the number of clients that have problems (for whatever reason) and then move to another cart after wasting lots of time. I don't know (or care) why they have these problems.. all I know is that it is more then one or two customers who have them.. and any system that is *that* complex or troublesome is not a good one.

Moving on.. I highly recommend www.x-cart.com as a fantastic cart software. It has just about every feature/functionality you could want, and is supported very well by both community forums and direct from the vendor.

They also have a www.litecommerce.com software that is designed to be "easier to use", and works with dreamweaver templates, etc. We've used it for a 1/2 dozen projects now, and it's very nice. Well worth the price.

My advice, since your client is not a technical person, is to purchase a paid script. You'll find support is much better, and your non-tech person won't be limited to visiting public community forums to try and find support on their own.

Be sure to let us know what you decide.

Were they having trouble with a shared ssl cert or did they have a dedicated IP with their own?

Just curious because I know cubecart has had a persistant nagging problem with shared SSL certs that they can't seem to get right.

For all clients, the problems occur with a dedicated IP of their own, with a standard SSL certificate installed on their own domain name.

Flakey would be an understatement, since there were several occasions when cubecart would totally deny them access to the admin area after "enabling" SSL for the installation.

Well it stores the SSL paths in the db, so if you put the wrong paths in, you are locked out. You just clear the db and you can put the right path in again.

I must admit that is lame, they should be in a file so you don't have to do that.

Other than that, are you saying it flaked out even after they got the right paths in?

I have used osCommerce before and found that it was a lot easier to use, it had plently of modules, and its practically the standard in open source carts...

I had someone customize a template for me, and the rest was as simple as using the admin to setup my products...
