View Full Version : Search rubbish?
Scotty_B 11-07-2005, 06:31 AM Is it just me or is the search feature on vB 3.5 absolutly rubbish?
I can't work out how to search for two words in a thread, tried all the usual suspects such as clientexec paypal, +clientexec +paypal, clientexec AND paypal but none of them seem to work, just returning threads that contain one word or the other?
May be just me missing something obvious?
Thanks.
layer0 11-07-2005, 07:54 AM Put it in quotes.
"clientexec paypal"
Scotty_B 11-07-2005, 08:40 AM I'd expect that to find the exact phrase, which wasn't really what I wanted, besides, it doesnt anyway, it still just finds either word in a topic.
layer0 11-07-2005, 05:20 PM Ahh..at a closer glance I see this search doesn't have an option for including all the words you specify in the results returned. Was this disabled?
Scotty_B 11-07-2005, 08:33 PM As far as I am concerned at this point in time, WHT has been downgraded.
gilbert 11-07-2005, 08:37 PM hrmmm scratches head as confused to whats going on

icecreams 11-08-2005, 07:07 PM I have to agree the search feature is not as good as it used to be.
Lem0nHead 11-09-2005, 08:15 AM yep
I agree the search really needs to be fixed
I can't find anything any more
the_pm 11-09-2005, 09:45 AM vB search v.3.+ has always been garbage. I've resorted to searching databases directly through phpMyAdmin when I want to pull info out of my own boards. vB really need to work on this feature...
Scotty_B 11-09-2005, 02:26 PM Shame, search is an important tool on a site like this. Would sooner have a working search feature like we had than the pointless gimiky AJAX stuff :(.
the_pm 11-09-2005, 03:12 PM Search didn't die because of AJAX. It never worked particularly well on the 3.x pre-AJAX versions either. Search is bad because...it's just bad.
Scotty_B 11-09-2005, 05:10 PM Yeah don't get me wrong, not blaming AJAX, just thinking that theres no real benefit to vB3.x over 2.x which had a working search :(.
blue27 11-09-2005, 07:31 PM If you want both words in the search use the + sign.
IE If you want to find threads with both "dedicated" and "cheap" you would use the format: +dedicated +cheap

maybe it would be a good way to work, but it doesn't work
try "+hello +john"
the second thread has no "hello", just "john"
Steven 11-10-2005, 01:07 AM a recent post i have made is not even showing up in the search...

As you can see, I already tried that.
Never mind multiple words. It doesn't even work for single words. For instance, I sign all my posts with Vito. Well, doing a search for Vito will yield some results, but many threads/posts are missed.
I do have to agree that the current search function really sucks. And as stated, given how valuable and frequently used that function is in this particular place, it's a real shame.

anon-e-mouse 11-10-2005, 07:58 AM I am able to find what I am looking for the same as before, but then I may have simpler searches ;)

Yes....I dont like the search feature now. Just when we think everyone actually uses the feature, now its become abit more complicated.
ldcdc 11-16-2005, 08:48 PM Yes....I dont like the search feature now.Agreed. I don't think I can even recommend it to users anymore. :(

Try searching for a hyphenated word, such as a hyphenated company name. You can't do it. Well, you can search, but you can't get relevant results.

Weird thing is that it works fine on every other 3.5 forum - FU, IWDN, and my personal one. Seems WHT is having a lot of problems with it - probably since there is a lot to search from.
Have you guys emptied and rebuilt the search indexes?

Hyphenated words haven't worked since 2003. If the relevant part was before the -, you were in luck.
