I've been reselling with CommuniTech (http://www.communitech.net) for years. One of their features, as many of the "big" hosts offer, is one static IP for virtual hosting account.
As I go into the dedicated server world, I see single-IP sites are rare, and name-based hosting in the rule. How does CommuniTech give each site an IP? Don't they have to justify, too?
My main plus with static IPs is you could view the site before it went live. Is there any way to view a name-based site from a webserver before the DNS changes?
Thanks,
Scott

CommuniTech are an old company, they shouldn't really be giving out IPs for sites that can be 'name-based'... usually people will not need a dedicated IP for every site, only for SSL, anonymous FTP and nameservers.

Depending on which control panel you are using, if any, there should be a feature that allows you to use your server IP and the account username to view the pages, something like http://IP/~username/.

To get instant DNS resolving, you can add your domain to your "hosts" file on your box, often found (in Windows) at
c:\windows\hosts or
c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Add the following line, replacing xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx with your new IP address and (of course) domain.com with the appropriate domain(s)
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx domain.com www.domain.com
Don't forget to remove the entry after the DNS does get propogated.

JKLIVIN, I was just saying that since CommuniTech has been online for a long time, the old IP request system allowed IPs for anything really, but the rules have changed.

Yes, the old companies used to (and still) give IP based hosting. And I simply love it :)
