View Full Version : Signup Ratio
DavidC 04-20-2002, 10:24 AM Hello!
I'm about to start a hosting business and I'm thinking of doing some advertising in PPCSEs like Overture. My question to you guys is: what kind of signup ratio is normal for this kind of traffic?
Thanks
/David
nmihosting 04-20-2002, 02:26 PM We started using Overture a few weeks ago, the first day we got two sign-ups. I was very pleased becuase it was a huge ROI, we had spent a few dollars in click throughs and got two customers on or higher end plans. Then nothing. No sign-up's from Overture since ( that I can quantify anyway - except a fraudulant one that is). Most recent sign-up's have come via word of mouth from our regular customers.
So I don't know what to tell you. I am still advertising at Overture, and keep meaning to post here at the forum asking others for their experiences. Maybe this thread will shed some light.
DavidC 04-20-2002, 02:39 PM I'm sad to here that. It seems pretty strange.
Besides Overture then, do you have any other experiences from PPCSEs?
As I'm new to running a hosting company I have no idea of if I should expect a ratio of 1:100 or 1:2000 in signups? Any ideas?
Thanks

You could also try http://www.ppcforhosts.com/. We have been getting a decent amount of clicks from them, no sign-ups yet. But they have just launched and our ads have only been running a week or two.
To be honest I am not sure what ratio to expect. Until recently we were only offering hosting in our local area so we had a different advertising model. Now that we are offering it to Int'l there is the need to advertise at places like Overture, but I am pretty new to pay per click.
Google has not been good, way to many other hosts competing for just a few spaces per search. At least with Overture your ad gets shown.
Sorry I am not much help! Hopefully a few others will post and help us both out.
mahinder 04-20-2002, 03:28 PM i can say you are getting extremely good results. For us the advertisements at goto (before Overture) produced almost negligible results.
oh man, look at the price of key word web hosting
$8.89 / click. :eek2:

Hi mahinder,
Yeah, bidding to be in the top 3 for the term 'web hosting' is only for those with a large budget.
We are mainly bidding on terms that get less searches but still a respectable amount of traffic. But you would be surprised at how many people actually wade through pages of results - we do get clicks for 'web hosting', even though we are way down on the list.
As I said before, we are getting traffic from pay per click advertising, just no sign-ups since the initial two on our first day at Overture.
Does anyone else have experience of Overture and other pay per clicks to share?

PPCforhosts.Com looks promising. I'll have a look at them, thanks.
If someone could give me an idea of a normal signup ratio I'd be glad!
Techark 04-21-2002, 12:56 AM I am getting about a 1:150 ratio which is not that great to me.
One thing I did find out advertising on google, was I got lots of click thrus from the competetion.
I am using Findwhat.com right now and sign up rate is still low but at least the cost per click is a lot lower.
Any way if you figure out a good way to increase the sign up ratio let me know.

I don't think 1:150 is too bad, but it may be expensive when paying $0.5-$1.0 per click.
Thanks for the info anyway, it helped me alot!

dk2002 04-21-2002, 11:18 AM Why you guys don't try those pay per result ad network? CPC always mean for burning money and no result
AhmedF 04-21-2002, 06:02 PM From my own experiences, FindWhat.com has been the best for ROI
Hth! :)

I have been thinking of that too. But I need to find a good ad network which have many affiliates that might be interested in my program and at the same time doesn't have any huge setup fees (such as cj.com).
Any recommendations?
AhmedF 04-21-2002, 09:12 PM For CPA companies with a rather small minimum amount, I would recommend ShareASale, FineClicks, or ClickXchange.

Thank you for the suggestions.
So, what do you think would be a fair commission to give affiliates? If they sell a $9.95/month plan, what kind of payout should they get? $10, $20?
I'd appreciate if you'd give me a hint here.
Thanks
AhmedF 04-22-2002, 04:34 PM Well,
If you make it that the terms state that they must stay for a month, then a $15 plan could work well [for a $9.95 plan].
At the same time, if you have more than one plan, then a comission based program could be better.

I emailed you with some stuff :-)

And I've replied...
What's there in the emails?
Is it top secret? :stickout
:)
Try google.com's cost-per-click AdWords Select. Looks quite promising :)
AhmedF 04-22-2002, 10:48 PM Heheh ... no ... just sharing my own experiences as a guideline of what he could expect
hotice007 04-23-2002, 02:32 AM $8.89 per click... so if I go click 10 times the host looses almost $100? woah ....
