I'll soon be running an AMD 1.4GHZ processor in a 1U server. I know that AMDs tend to run hot- do you think that there could be problems down the line? I expect it to be moderately loaded.

thanks

I would never put a 1.4GHz thunderbird in a 1U space, If its a Palomino maybe, but really, Intel dominates the server market.

The original poster was asking about cooling issues associated with the processor in a 1U space, not about market share. He's right to be concerned, IMHO, but not because of Intel's market share ;)

Some asus motherboards have a feature that shuts down the processor if heating problems arise... From what I've heard, if your fan goes, so does your processor.

I have software on my computer that regulates the heat problems. if the tempeature goes over 45° it shuts down the computer. it can be customized with al kinds of options...

software is called cpu_cool

ok. Thanks for the help. I'll look into it. My RaQ was running at up to 50 Degrees, and I dont want to go through all that again

I have a 1U AMD XP 1700+ server, and it works fine. So what if Intel dominates the server market? Microsoft dominates the operating system market, but I don't run Windows on my computer.

I have to agree - market share means absolutely jack - especially in this industry.

AMD processors have been great for us. They are nearly 1/2 the price than Intel, and does the same if not more work especially when you get around the 900Mhz and up range. I would never put a 1.2 even in a 1U box because they do run hot at times, and 1U's are very hard to keep cool when under stress. I would look at going with at LEAST a 2U with additional fans for airflow if using a 1.4, along with monitoring software to check it.

Just my 2 cents.

We have a Dual AMD 1800 XP server in a 2U case and it has been running just fine, nothing fried so far.
Obviously, the server has been professionally built and has good cooling.
