I have a dumb question....i know if there is someone spamming from my server (and complaints come in) that my server IP can get black listed at spews and places like that.

But what if the spammer only hosts his site on my server and didn`t actually use any one of my servers to spam but instead used some sort of desk top mailer to spam. Could my server IP thing still be blacklisted even though the spam didn`t come from my servers at all...only his site his hosted on my server?

Can somebody puh-leeease answer my lousy question? (before the world ends...)

This would all depend on the policy of the blacklister. Some ban the IP that the spam came from, some ban everything involved with the spam (site, IP, sender, etc).

Spews will add you to their list if you don't take action against the site that is using spam to advertise.

As frank said, it depends on the list. There are a lot of lists for just open relays, and there are a lot of lists that have ISPs who are spam friendly.

I see thanks. How do they get the IP of the spammer if he is using dial up interent like AOL or something? Cause then the IP changes every single time you sign off the net and sign back on.

Or do they not get that IP...but instead his actual computer`s IP?

I`m just curious.

Chances are if he is spamming for a site, they will find that sites IP address by a simple nslookup command, and blacklist that site. This is a very common script that is used when the spam is sent from AOL or other means.

This is also the problem alot of AOL users get when trying to send mail, the IP that they get assigned might be blacklisted at some company a friend or something works at, and in turn gets returned. Then us as ISP's get to explain the mail server is not down, just that IP was blacklisted, and etc, etc, etc.

PS - Yet another reason AOL is hated by ISP's, they cause more work and do not ever listen to us when we complain about users spamming, even with defenitive proof who it was.

Do you know what account holder this is? If so, shut them down. It's not worth trying to be nice or find ways to maintain their account. You can never take too hard an approach to spammers. Rewrite your AUP if need be. Let them wail away at their right to free speech while you protect the rights of your other customers to a service free from them.

Personally I like the one I saw that said, "we respect your right to free speech, so if you decide to spam, please respect our right to fine you $100 per incident"
