View Full Version : Seeking a new host

I've been looking for a decent host all night and I can't find one yet! I wanted more than 500mb space, lots of bandwidth, subdomains (more than 5) for $40 or less. (preferably less) :)

I also have a couple of questions. I know almost NOTHING about hosting or the terms or anything. If I have a subdomain, they cut into my space or do they get space of their own? And if someone offers a domain pointer, can I point a .com/.net/.org to a subdomain on my site or does it only point to the original ip address?

Thanks.

Re:Sub-Domains

Depends how you want it set up. If you want a sub-domain as http:www/yourdomain.com/sub-domain then the space and bandwidth "come out" of the overall allotment for your top lebel domain (i.e. http://www.yourdomain.com). OTOH, if you want http://sub-domain.yourdomain.com that depends on the host. Some will also allow you to run it from the same server as http://www.yourdomain.com while others will want you to put it on it's own server with its own space and bandwidth.

As to pointing another domain, that again depends on the host. Depending how the host is setup you may or may not be able to have an other top level domain point to a sub domain on your server. IOW, having http://www.other-domain.com point to http://www.yourdomain.com/sub-domain.

My suggestion is to ask all these questions of the host first before you sign up.

In my opinion most hosting companies will be able to park domain and point it toward a sub domain.

Actually, any VDI host has the capabilities of doing that in Web Host Manager, just ask if they allow it

Oh okay. I get it now. I just needed to know exactly what a domain pointer is.

I wasn't trying to start something here, I just had a few general questions. I just started my site 9 mos. ago and I know nothing about hosting.

Thanks for helping me out :)

A domain pointer will allow you to host more than one site on a hosting account. For example: your domain you host now is located at http://www.yourdomain.com. If you purchase another domain name, instead of having to purchase another hosting account you can use part of your web space from your first hosting account if they allow domain pointers. The second domain, http://www.newdomain.com, would be located at http://www.yourdomain/second_domain/. When someone types http://www.newdomain.com in their browser, they will actually be going to http://www.yourdomain/second_domain/, but they will not know this because their browser window will still show http://www.newdomain.com.

This is just a way of allow you to host 2 or more sites on the same account without any added expense.
